In 2008 at the Royal Aeronautical Society Alan Joyce spoke about the Frequent Flyer Program and said all the profits should be allocated to Qantas Airways. It was quite obvious that without an Airline a FF Program is worth nothing! Mind you he NEVER said this ever again, was fully briefed not to mention this again as it was not according to the PLAN. Air Canada was a great example, did not not work well. When queried and discussed in the United States the comment was "Hey over here a FF Program is a liability not an asset!". As far as Terry McCann he has no idea and his whole article was an embarrassment.

This Terry McCrann story (above) probably was generated from a script from Q PR to counter the criticism
I've seen Terry at MEL in the past quietly exiting the Chairman's Lounge

Didn't expect this: QAN over the past couple of days up now to $1.58. Hold onto your hats, I guess nobody has a clue what's going on - not just Alan Joyce... Unfortunately people will love him for this.

I agree with the story posted before that says "Ideas man: Alan Joyce isn't a liar, he just doesn't know what he's talking about"

Pretty much sums it up

...on rhe other hand, I believe that Joyce is a symptom of the disease called Clifford. In criminology it is an article of both faith and astonishment that psycopaths find each other. Since approximately 1% of the population, or roughly 70 million people, are phsycopaths, it follows that many of them will percolate to the upper echelons of business, riiding on their natural attributes of charm and glibness.

I believe, given Clifford's insistence that unions must be crushed and worker's rights trampled, that he is the driving force behind the distorted world view that Qantas management currently operates. Joyce, and his lieutenants, are merely the puppets of a larger malevolence.

The business press are finally waking to the falsehood of the "narrative de jour" nature of Joycean pronouncements...and those of his minions. Joyce has exhausted all of his plausible excuses for failure, and his diminutive charm and Irish begorah are now bankrupt. But Joyce is not the real problem:I contend that he is simply the current handy proxy for Clifford; much like a seasoned criminal grooms an acolyte to perform the messy business of trigger-pulling, Clifford has promoted a patsy who shares his cynical world view, an ally in the struggle to convert the Qantas treasury into their own oersonal wealth. All with the gormless aquiescence of the fund managers.

I know with clarity the endeavours which I shall coach my progeny to pursue. Hint:it ain't anything useful or productive, but it does have an MBA at the end.

Australopithecus has nailed it, post 5046. Clifford and his anti union agenda has been the driving force behind all of this. If Joyce had any credibility, he would be accepting at least a 50% pay cut, but he never will, too busy slashing employees that run rings around him in ability and integrity. The consolation is that these people will never really enjoy the fruits of there dodgy attempts. To loyal Qantas employees, have faith that the future will be better for you somewhere, out of the poisonous world that today's corporate life is leading us.You will be able to stand tall and look straight into that mirror.

Reading thru the figures Jetstar international load factors have improved well, however overall I would say that the return to profitability is been driven by driving down costs not an increase in load factor or yield. If my memory serves me correctly Joyce said unit costs were down 4%.

Spot on. An IR agenda is foremost as opposed to advancing our Airline.

Quick question, when was the last time anyone saw the big boss man of Qantas, Leigh Clifford? He sends the little bird out to be corn-holed but he never answers questions himself. Is he like Howard Hughes? Hiding in his penthouse apartment watching Ice Station Zebra, ?

Apologies if posted here or elsewhere (from the Oz) .... I wouldn't be too unhappy:

LAST financial year’s dismal Qantas result saw the airline’s top executives take a collective hit to their take-home pay, with chief executive Alan Joyce’s pay down 40 per cent on the previous year.

The airline’s record underlying pre-tax loss ensured none of the top six executives earned shares under the long-term incentive plan and all upper and middle management were subject to a pay freeze without bonuses.

Mr Joyce, who also gave up 5 per cent of his base salary for the year, saw his take-home pay fall from $3.33 million to $2m. His statutory pay fell from $5.1m to $3.97m.

Chief financial officer Gareth Evans took home almost $400,000 less than in 2012-13 at $1.05m while Qantas Loyalty chief Lesley Grant and Qantas International boss Simon Hickey dropped below $1m.

Ms Grant took home $798,000 (down from $1.1m) and Mr Hickey pocketed $948.000 (down from $1.47m).

Running a low-cost carrier did not preclude Jetstar chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka from earning $1.04m but this was down from $1.36m in 2012-13.

Qantas Domestic’s Lyell Strambi earned $1.08m, down from $1.43m.

“The significant decrease in take-home pay for senior executives reflects the extremely challenging year and disappointing financial performance of the company,” a Qantas spokesman said.

“There were no bonuses awarded to executives and all employees are subject to an ongoing wage freeze.”

There was less pain on the airline’s board. Chairman Leigh Clifford took a 5 per cent hit to his base pay — down from $535,000 to $511,000 — but emerged with a total figure of $606,000 when all the perks were included. This was slightly above last year’s figure of $604,000.

I can't help thinking this is their "strategy theme song."

Dear Alan,

On a recent Emirates flight back to Melbourne I managed to escape from my window seat where passage had been blocked by something resembling a corpse to take a whiz. Not too keen to get back to my seat I struck up a conversation with someone who had helped himself to one of the three empty bulkhead seats near the galley. Turns out he was a self made man from the building industry who has retired, travels often overseas with his wife, owns a few properties, has set up his kids financially, and upgrades his luxury car every couple of years. Then his cousin shows up who coincidently turned out to be someone I know very well, another self made man of similar standing. A celebration was in order and the staff of Emiriates Airlines on this flight were all too helpful in getting our little party under way inbetween their regular duties, thank you very much guys and gals.

When the subject of airline travel popped up in our conversation both these men said without any hesitation Qantas is now sh!t. Think about it Alan, they are spreading this message to their wives, their families, their friends and their business associates. They are not saying Qantas is sh!t they are saying Qantas is now sh!t, there is a difference Alan.

In a day when the term Asian business trip is a euphemism for sex tour, and high flying executives snort cocaine off little Asian boy’s butt cheeks I can see just how unsexy it is to be a rote following dullard called a worker, and what a boring way to make your money too. I suppose you’re not like the others and deserved that salary, and those staff and services cuts must simply be details facilitating your big picture journey. One could say you have succeeded in moulding Qantas into an image of yourself, the now, all congratulations to you sir.

Sincerely,
Cattletruck

Just as intended......

True story, like every other BBQ this weekend. If the employees of your great company had a dollar for every time they were asked 'so mate, what's up with your airline', they could have bought it back from the wolves.....customer satisfaction? engagement? SMC....Perhaps a new acronym but didn't know how else to describe my feelings....The first two letters stand for Suck and My......and the last is how you wish.....

The international business is on its knees in the sand pit, dressed in an orange jump suit with a filthy mongrel holding a butter knife to its throat.....

We have done nothing wrong.

Just remember in Alan's own words "Management have done nothing wrong"

It's the fuel costs, that bothersome company Virgin, the belligerent autocracy in Hong Kong, those cunning devils in Vietnam , the unions, set up costs in Japan the greatest potential market in Asia, the government not giving us a hand out, Air New Zealand Cathay, Singapore Airlines, MAS and every other airline that flies into Australia with their B777 forcing us to reduce our yield to fill aircraft, 65% line in the sand, two aircraft for every Virgin aircraft, Airbus delivering their aircraft on time with no penalties, (The cheek of it) inefficient aircraft, a board with little airline experience, Asian airlines copying us when we set up budget airlines there reducing our potential profits, poor fuel hedging, Emirates taking more customers from us than we expected, more managers than we really need (but who pander to my narcissitic needs and follow my lead unquestionably) my uncompromising self belief that it will all work out cause I'm rarely wrong ! My 2 million dollar plus salary....... Whoops did I just say that.

Did I miss anything ? I was really only getting started !!!!

Let me know if I missed anything.

No, that seemed like a fairly spectacular, well-deserved and comprehensive roast. Could you perhaps have blamed these stupid customers more, you know, the ones demanding high service levèls, low fares, a decent schedule?

Disagree with comments above. Few to many friday night whiskies in one maybe. Qantas flight crews almost always excellent in my experience and so is most of international fleet. Certainly better than a recent international US Airways flight.. I don't fly Q as much either anymore as I refuse to go to any Arab state (a personal preference) but perhaps people slagging off Q should try doing the job. Hold your heads high crews, it's the management that's the issue here. Il be happy to return if it all gets sorted.

I must agree with extralite,

I recently flew to Dubai return, up with Qantas and back with Emirates. I rated Qantas as the better carrier for business class. The staff were far more experienced and really knew their job. Just small things, on Qantas flight when it was lights out and time to sleep, the staff were very quiet and crept around every now and then to make sure all was good, I slept well and felt the crew really knew what the business travellers needs were. The seats were comfortable and everything worked!

On the Emirates flight the staff walked around like elephants every 5 minutes, up and down, up and down, which made it near on impossible to sleep. One flight attendant opened my overhead locker every five minutes to retrieve something out of his crew bag and slammed it shut every time, he only stopped after an angry glare from myself and the chap beside me after being continually woken during sleep. The young good looking flight attendants on Emirates were good, but had nothing on the older experienced crew on Qantas.

For some reason I felt safer on Qantas, not sure why? Maybe it's my own insecure thoughts about what's going on in the Middle East? Who knows?

Hats off to the Qantas crew for keeping this train wreck going for now, great service, you should be proud to still be working for Qantas, even though you're working through very trying times. Who knows what the future holds. Keep your head high, it's still a great airline!
