It's the sort of day when airline management should look out the window and see that pilots are worth what they pay them.

Oh, and 500 hour total cadet pilots shouldn't be in the front seat of a jet!

Totally agree, but sadly I think they would be saying something more like "Now THAT is why we spend all that money on autopilots"

As for 500hr cadets, they will defend that one to the death-someone elses

Nothing unusual for a bad day in NZWN with that wind. I flew in yesterday evening and it sure was fun, but have had worse in NZ. Still, it was a good effort for YSSY.

Oh I shouldn't worry about conditions like that: the automatics will take care of everything.

Thumbs up

Drat. And here's me at home, watching trees down all over the place when I could be having the time of my life.

Just watching the SQ A380 turn over Botany Bay now. I think at this time of day it's a departure rather than a go around. Awesome all the same.

Not flying today... and damn glad too! The Southwesterlies are the bad ones now at Sydney due to the construction that has been taking place at the International. Lots of mechanical turbulence near the threshold of 16R from the new car park and elsewhere.

Ha Ha, you obviously only been there on "you tube"

54kts!
Try 60kts at surface in NZWN and 77kts at 2000ft! All from the NW.

Ok, kiwis win this argument but lose on the medal table (just)

Wow a whole big carpark building? What about the pretty 2000ft hill in NZWN?

As an ex Wellingtonian, now living in YSSY - today's weather here aint nowt but a gentle zephyr.
NZWN is a man's airport, with horrible, bollock shrinking cross winds, huge gusts, and big fat hills on either side.
Like landing on a freaking aircraft carrier in a gale on a bad day.
Many memories of looking out the rain spattered window of a 737, straight down the centreline as some guy in seat 0A was having the time of his life feeding in some insane crab angle.
Crosswind, schmosswind...

So long as you're not pissing into the wind Kremlin!

Still going, try 82kt @ 1000' at Wlg. Not so bad though, the SE wind there is the one that scares me. Zqn even worse for turb.
