"Planners looking for 18, yes 18, blokes to work o/t tonight, no takers.
Clearly overstaffed alright."

We were doing the same thing in 1989, the solution was then as it is now, that is, get rid of maintenance intensive aircraft and replace them with new aircraft which come with a maintenance honeymoon.

This will happen but unfortunately it would seem that all those brand spankers will be painted silver.

Seen the 'bucket' on any of the 380's lately. You can only defer so much for so long...

Thanks for your good wishes Bagus. But where I work, I'm in charge and have more to lose than the Leprechaun.
Anyway, you guys have my sincere sympathy, and all the best. No doubt we'll be next.

I'm easily confused, but to me it looks like Qantas International will be returned to profit in the short term and then be absorbed into Jetstar International because Jetstar will be the only Australian owned international airline.

Does that statement mean that QF International will be history within 5 years?

I was never any good at interpreting corporate doublespeak though. 8th Nov 2012 12:13
You make a good point, the rhetoric from this guy does my head in...

I think Ben puts some good points down in this piece just in today

Real issues behind Qantas maintenance job loss claims | Plane Talking

"The big concern in America, where it has been discussed in public by air safety officials and politicians for some time, is that as airlines move to lower their maintenance costs they must not be permitted to lower their accountability for maintenance outcomes, which is what the ALAEA is driving at.
Tied up with this concern is the ‘loss of control factor’. When airlines send work to a contractor, who in some cases is the engine maker or aircraft maker, they can become the last people to know about a problem."
As I see it, all pilots should be concerned about this aspect as well... at the end of the day, they are the ones left holding the bag!

That they are but so long as the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed, management have done their duty in absolving themselves of any responsibility when/if something does go wrong. It's always the guy at the coalface's fault because as we all know, there is a multi thousand page document that you should all be fully conversant with.

Industrial action these days is limited to EA bargaining periods. It's illegal to call a snap strike and theres been quite a few unions who have been punished because of it.

As Graeme from Jakarta used to say, Fark!!!! My thoughts and best wishes go out to those who are in the firing line.

My only hope is that knowing these clowns, you will be employed shortly as contractors on better conditions.

Thanks to all those who got me in the air safely. Just appalled at where this mob want to take this once great airline.

All the best guys,

What I think is that even discussing it on here is silly. Qantas stooges read this forum. Qantas stooges would like nothing more then to further demonize the ALAEA and their own engineering workforce and this forum is evidence. So be smart.

Besides, it won't change anything, CN was employed to rationalise Qantas Engineering. He demolished Air NZ's engineering, now he's demolished Qantas's infrastructure and history.

Regarding the 18 unfilled overtime slots apparently available tonight, in Base only, just wait - due to the lack of manpower the A checks will now be conducted in SIN/HKG/MNL.

Do you really think that the bloated Union rep will help you?

What have they ever done? Nothing is the answer.

They may spruike lots of magical answers but deliver nothing. Lots of hot air and will take your contributions and spend it on well... you've heard of Craig Thompson. If you can't DO the job join the Union!!

Any minute now, the tough talking fed sec will come in to rally the comrades and make a raft of ridiculous anti qantas threats and statements...........pity that none of that will help the poor guys and girls who are out of work.

Or is he still too busy trying to reform and unionize world of confidential safety reporting?

Fed sec........where art thou?

Nothing useful, as this one knows zero about engineering.
He's spent too long under the bridge

Just posting some of Qantas's own documents on our website. No need for confidential reporting on this one, their own powerpoint presentation says it all. Take a look at the links, that is if the Qantas control centre hasn't banned our site.

To answer, from my perspective.

They have done all they can. They don't run the company, they don't employ or dismiss. They are the group that collectively bargains on our behalf. They provide legal cover. They provide workplace advice. That's all I expect.

I don't think SP has ever spruiked a magical answer as to how we stay can stay employed. The management decided some time ago what they want to do with the company and we're all just going along for the ride.

Are you implying that SP is spending our member contributions on prostitutes ? Be careful what you write on the internet mate. It's not anonymous.
