Virgin Australia's plans for 2012
its cheaper to fly the B777 from SYD-NAN than keeping it parked on the ground in Sydney?
Any idea when XFC/D are coming into service, and on what routes?

MEL/SYD-PER...
Under JB's plan I doubt you would see any A330 going to DPS, personally knowing the loads it would definetly not be profitable because its PAX only. I doubt you will see HNL because they already have an agreement with HAL.
I personally think you will see as mentioned previously; HKG, SIN and BKK to start with to link up hubs.
Bear in mind aswell there is still an option for another B77W...VS have been eyeing off BMI slots at LHR... I wonder why?

DPS would be off the cards for the new 332's, most likely a business orientated market. Moving forward the leisure destinations seem only stuff for the 737 fleet, why would you want leisure pax when you could maintain a constant income from business pax?

MEL rarely had J class PAX. The other thing to look at is what I mentioned earlier is there is no freight facility in DPS, the A330s capability to move freight aswell well as high yielding PAX would be better utilized elsewhere.
Recall a number of DPS sectors with business class well patronized. Have even seen it full on back of clock ops.
Why fork out big bucks for J class when with the same airfare, you could probably upgrade your hotel at Bali and just travel in the back..
but if you pack it full of business people outta MEL to SIN/HKG...
As for VS and VA on the HKG route, who knows.. who would have thought that they were able to use the name 'Virgin' internationally after talking to Uncle Choong... I'm sure if the idea is sold to VS, they'd jump onboard with the idea of doing LHR/HKG only....
I think JB will initially concentrate on the domestic operation. He knows where the cream is in the QF domestic ops.The golden triangle plus Perth for the business class traffic and the regional operations is where QF is ripping people off on price. He knows that from his time there. He will run the A330's and the ATR's on these routes releasing 737's and the EJet's for more frequency on other routes.Any international operations will be furthur down the track.
Mildura would require a MEL basing unless it came in from Canberra which is unlikely

With a planned fleet of up to 20 ATR's, it makes sense that once they have more aircraft, they would expand the network to include most larger towns in NSW, QLD and VIC and perhaps Northern Tassie.

I think the "downgrading" of SYD-AY and ML-MIA from ejet to ATR has been on the books for a long time.
No idea on how the numbers stack up between Albury and Sydney, but there is no way that VA is making money on the ML-MIA run. Plenty of times there's been less than 50 passengers each way, and sometimes the 737 does the trip! IMHO, the only reason that VA are still servicing the route is to keep it open until an ATR can do it.
Why so? CB-ML-MIA return isn't a difficult route. Qlink often did the reverse when the Q300 was based there.

Mildura is about the only route out of Melbourne for a 50+ seat turboprop that will possibly turn a profit. All the others that are already not serviced by jets are 30 seat or less and the northern Tassie routes are too close to Launceston to attract many away from the low cost large jets. Mildura could easily be crewed from a CB base with overnights. Melbourne base would be easier of course but then would need additional destinations from Mel to make it work.

Could do a few routes with the ATRs from Melbourne. Devonport, MT Gambier, Mildura, Albury, Wagga, Woolongong even Canberra. Could open a MEL Base with 3 a/c when enough are at the SYD and BNE bases first which seems the priority. How about a PER and ADL base i.e. for Olympic dam etc.

Woolongong, Canberra and Launceston are already serviced by turboprop and jet traffic. Melbourne - Woolongong would be a bit of a long haul effort at ATR speeds, especially return into a strong westerly.
