Australia's biggest PR disasters of 2011: Qantas makes top 5 three times; Kyle Sandilands ranks 8

For the second consecutive year, Qantas has topped the list of the annual PR Disasters Awards conducted by PR watchdog and blogsite PRdisasters.com. And for the first time in the awards' history, the airline had three embarrassing PR glitches feature in the year's top ten most talked about PR nightmares.

While the unprecedented grounding of its fleet ensured that Qantas topped the list of 2011's biggest PR blunders, "the flying kangaroo" also took out second spot with its ill-fated Twitter 'luxury pyjamas' promotion on Twitter. Its rugby related 'racism' gaffe - where Wallaby supporters went 'blackface' to win a promotional prize - also edged into the awards' top five.
Troubled footy star Brendan Fevola's much talked about fall from AFL grace and Tony Abbott's 'stunned mullet' TV interview with Seven News reporter Mark Riley also earned a top five placing.

Australia's Top 10 PR Disasters for 2011 (in order of magnitude) :
1. Qantas grounding - business decision that inconvenienced and angered a nation
2. Qantas luxury Tweet - poorly conceived Twitter promo which drew ire not idolising
3. Brendan Fevola - termination of troubled star's contract with Brisbane Lions
4. Tony Abbott - mute, shaking-head TV interview freeze
5. Qantas golliwog - social media promo, which catalysed a racial brouhaha
6. Ricky Nixon - PR fallout from unseemly association with the St Kilda teen
7. Larissa Behrendt - bitchy comments against Bess Price published on Twitter
8. Kyle Sandilands - personal vendetta against a journo forced a humiliating apology
9. Australian Defence Force - Cadet Skype-cam sex scandal
10. Gasp Retail - bad customer service flowed from in-store to email; a PR 101 fail!

The Awards - calculated by online monitoring agency CyberChatter - highlight the worst examples of business, celebrity, government, media and sports PR blunders. The results assess the most talked about PR disasters in both traditional and online media, including social media spaces. To qualify as a PR disaster, the incident must catalyse sustained, negative media coverage for the brand, business or person at the centre of the story.

Says Gerry McCusker, author of the 'PR Disasters' book and blog: "The data suggests that microblog tool Twitter is most often used to vent anger at brands and personalities who get their PR wrong. And the most vocal Aussie critics appear to be those in the 25-34 age bracket, although over-50s were out in force against the Qantas grounding."

Louise Di Francesco of Cyber Chatter added: "Using our online and social media tracking technology, we've crunched the amount of online conversations relating to PR gaffes and the tone of those conversations. This allows us to accurately gauge the impact of these PR disasters on the public perception of the brands and people Australians are most closely following - and judging."

Sorry, Withless gets paid how much??? Joyce sanctions this disgraceful record as CEO? Poor poor poor shareholders, you have no chance.

Great idea ! His 707 is more reliable than the rest of the QF fleet!
Are we talking before or after plastic surgery? I still remember when he could actually smile! Now he carries around more plastic than a modern Airbus.

The problem with this blog spot and watchdog is that it appears to essential be just one individual. The awards are no doubt just about issues the blogger has an interest in. To be truly reflective of being PR disasters, wider industry perspective should be canvassed.

So if you include some popular media shows like Gruen Transfer and Hungry Beast and then also include talk back radio and then also the wider media, you find that there is no way QF would occupy 3/5 top PR disasters.

Including the AJ murder plot, the is it or isn't it a QF flight (Jetconnect incident), left handed screwdrivers, kamikaze pilot description, 737s grounded by the airline for sale and not by a maintenance dispute, a dismal senate performance and the 71% payrise whilst I sack 1000 and shrink the airline into oblivion, it is clear that QF should have 10/10 top PR disasters.

I forgot to consult with you first on this matter, but thanks for the feedback. May I ask if Wirthless or Mini Me will be presented with a statue of a fresh steamer in recognition of their efforts to pick up these awards???

I couldn't agree more. Perhaps Mr GT - 'Aviation Expert, General Bullshi#artist and Biased Reporter' could hand out the 10 prestigious steaming awards to Team Wirthless and the Poodle walker??

Qantas Airways has been rocked by the sudden departures of two senior executives.

The head of government and public affairs Jim Carden and the head of corporate communication Justin Kelly resigned on Tuesday and left their positions immediately.

They reported directly to the group executive of government and corporate affairs, Olivia Wirth, who many say is the closest confidant of chief executive Alan Joyce.

Last night Ms Wirth confirmed Mr Carden and Mr Kelly had left the airline but declined to discuss the circumstances surrounding their departure. She said only that they had “resigned to pursue other interests”.

Both men were recent recruits, having joined Qantas last year.

Qantas’s relations with the Labor government were badly hurt last October by its dramatic decision to lock out workers and ground the airline over an industrial dispute.

Several Labor ministers condemned in the airline and the dispute is now being considered by Fair Work Australia.

Mr Carden was previously head of corporate affairs at Brisbane Airport. Mr Kelly joined the airline from the Nine newsroom in Sydney and before that was press secretary to NSW premier Morris Iemma.

Ms Wirth is unlikely to struggle to fill the two prestigious roles, which have traditionally been highly sought after.

The airline’s media and government relations functions at Qantas have changed significantly since Ms Wirth replaced former Rudd government chief of staff David Epstein, who left the national carrier to head public affairs at BHP Billiton.

Mr Epstein left the mining company in October after 11 months in the job. The two executives reporting directly to him at Qantas were Ms Wirth, who headed the media team, and Jane McKeon, head of government and international.

Ms McKeon was poached by Virgin Australia boss John Borghetti in 2010. Ms Wirth’s predecessor in charge of Qantas’s media relations was Belinda de Rome, who is now at Etihad Airways in Abu Dhabi.

The dramatic action taken by the Qantas board to ground the airline also placed considerable pressure on the airline’s relationship with the Gillard government.

Assistant Treasurer Bill Shorten attacked Ms Wirth in question time for her role in the dispute and alluded to her background as a former tourism adviser to Joe Hockey.

Bad people drive out good people, oldest story in the book.

It didn't take the new recruits very long to find out what was going on.

There is something rotten at the very heart of Qantas that goes beyond managment and the Board, and I don't know what it is. I suspect it might be a very large shareholder. I say this because nothing the airline does makes sense in terms of generating shareholder value as far as I can tell.

The "Guru" Principle

One day you get a tap on the shoulder from a superior and you are promoted.
Not only promoted but elevated into a position that is way beyond your capabilities.You think"surely someone has made a mistake"
The salary increase is amazing as are the associated corporate perks.So you decide what the heck I'll enjoy it until someone corrects the mistake.It never happens.After a while you notice that nothing is getting done.No decisions are being made.A lot of paper shuffling goes on .You say nothing in case you are exposed as being way out of your depth.You come to enjoy your position to the point where you dont want to lose it.You notice someone just below you is pretty sharp and in the last couple of departmental meetings you have been shown upby this person.Either you go or they go.Doesn't matter that they do a fantastic job.They are a threat.You make their life miserable and eventually they exit stage right.You come to realise that it was your lack of expertise that got you the promotion.You are protecting someone's rump.You won't threaten them because you lack the knowlege and expertise to do so.You are beholden to them because they promoted you.They are your "guru".Even though you know they are incompetent you say nothing.Lets not rock the boat.
You work for Qantas.
Sound familiar?
The place is full of "gurus" and their incompetent subordinates.

Compromise of Principles

Informed sources(love that phrase)indicate that they were not happy with the way in which things are handled at the rat.With their principles still in tact they departed.
With a "guru" like OW if you are competent then you make the "guru" look bad.Either keep quiet or get out.They chose the latter.
