.
The recruitment for direct entry pilots have seemed to come to a complete stop. Probably not looking good for a cadetship this year.

Cadet vs RAAF

Hey guys, new to the forum and its interesting reading some of the posts here.
I have been looking to go into flying after finishing a Uni degree in Pharmacy after many years of being told I couldn't go I to flying by family.

Was looking at cadet program's due to the offset cost but possibly through the RAAF depending in contract time I would be locked into. Any thoughts in the length of RAAF training and virgin cadet program?

What the external recruitment has dried up, there's a hold file as long as Megan Gale's legs and not much movement going on yet there's a need for cadets?

By the time the cadets are selected, trained, and have flown with VARA on an ATR or (now I notice) a F50, you're looking at least five years into the future before they get anywhere near a jet. Guys will be long off the hold file or flying for another carrier by then.

Last I heard VA management were forecasting pilot shortages in the long-term - cadets were one way to help boost future supply.

Does the Kelpie have any more news about his rumours from a couple of weeks ago?

I noticed the advertisement for direct entry FO's for the ATR is stated as 'Expression of Interest' and was posted a month before the cadet advertisement with no date for close of applications. Does that mean the direct entry ad was only made to test the water so to speak to gauge the pool of experience already out there before they plan the cadet recruitment program? Or are VARA also currently recruiting DEFO's as well as cadets? And if so, has anyone been called for interviews as yet?

There will ALWAYS be a need for experienced DEFO's on the ATR Training Wheels. The rate of expansion currently happening as well as the number of airframes ordered means that someone will have to fill the left seat of these new aircraft. Cadets cant do that.....

anybody know how many cadets they are going to take on? i applied last year with no luck.. so i continued my training and almost have my CPL... still a few more months left though. I'm going to apply again but not getting my hopes up at ALL. Judging by last time, it seems if you don't already work for VA you are unlikely to even have your application looked at.. let alone accepted.

they are still saying there may be a program for pilots beyond their CPL, but they have been saying that for a year. My lesson learnt from all this is don't hold your breath, if you don't get in this way just do it on your own... you cant count on these cadetships.

Thats probably obvious to most, but sometimes you get caught up in the dream and get disheartened.

Wish I could go back a dozen years and tell my High School self that Maths is going to be important in what I wish to do later in life.... Damn pre-reqs

Guess i'll just keep on bashing out the GFPT>PPL hours and so on, then GA it up and hope from there.

I don't know about the compass tests this year, but I can only hope. Problem for me is that I am finished high school and turning 18 the day after applications close. Don't know what to say about my current age, I don't think they will be too happy about a newly 18 year old joining in? Also my low level of flying hours (7) is going to be a problem. I'm hopeful though, I hope I atleast get a look in to atleast do the test? Anyone know of the criteria for getting a look in?

Andrew I don't know much about the system they use to employ people but I wouldn't worry too much about fine detail etc. At 18 another year on the sideline building up your skills to get through the testing when called up may be a blessing in disguise. Have you applied for Jetstar? Make sure you go for all opportunities and don't make the mistake we all made by getting tunnel vision on one job.

SenZub, can you do a bridging course? Long time ago thats what I did. 6 months one night a week, tick the box move onto next hurdle. All the best guys and girls see you in the seat one day.

Berealgetreal - I don't live in a Capital City alas, so the only options when I last looked a year ago, was to do the VCE Maths via TAFE here in Bendigo. But as they mainly cater as a VCE for people who left school and are not currently fulltime employed, they run the classes during the day.
I find myself gainfully employed and that doesn't suit my situation unfortunately. I've been out of the loop maths wise for some time and so I know that personally, distance learning would be insufficient as I want somebody there to answer my questions then and there.

From earlier posts in this thread, it seems at least one cadet last year already had significant experience, having completed other cadetships (multiple?). The recruitment page for this year states limited experience up to PPL and minimal flying hours.

Any thoughts on the change?

Went through the 2012 FAQ and the experience requirements were the same as this year - minimal flying hours and upto a ppl for their inaugural cadetship.

Angry

One thing I don't think has been mentioned on this thread, is that quite a few LHS drivers are filling seats for SWA and REX.....on 457 Visa programs from overseas, Has this been mentioned before on this thread ? its so long I haven't got the time to read through it all. Taking jobs right out from underneath local talent. That's your airline industry for you.

Have any applicants with zero actual flying experience been accepted in prior years? Eg Is it a true ab-initio program?

I have heard they would rather true 0 hour applicants with some applicable aviation experience. ie. Virgin ground staff who thought flying would be cool.
