from what i've seen on my last four flights..
Does't that just show that you are becoming jaded?
It also pre supposes that most pax fly frequently like you. Many do not and will still be hearing it for the first time.
I believe the true test of the announcements usefulness is the hit rate at qantaspilots.com.au

AIPA:- Use this change to your advantage.
Remind everyone of what little Johnnie used to say in the safety video and how QF policy now has changed for the worse.

Take the upper hand.

It's yet more proof.

Aussie Herb n Spare Me:

Explain to me then how, for so many many years, on hundreds of operating or paxing flights that it is ok for a Capt/FO to make his "welcome onboard" address while taxiing out..!? (sterile cockpit and all)

It has happened far more often than not so how come the company have not pulled these guys into line for breaches of the FAM?

Well pure and simply because at the moment they are looking for any reason to nail people. Previously these PA's were in violation of FAM policy but no one was really going to do anything about it . The sterile cockpit policy is the sterile cockpit policy . AIPA has asked the pilots not to give the PA during this period . So quite simply don't do it during this period . Simple enough for you ?

OK, Ultergra, I will explain it to you.

AIPA have specifically requested us not to make this particular PA during the Sterile Cockpit Period.

Making welcome aboard PA's during the Sterile Cockpit Period (such as during Taxi) is permitted under the FAM subject to operational requirements and workload.

During the many industrial campaigns I have been involved in , the focus was always on keeping the troops united behind the campaign. The form of action being taken was very important , if all members did not fully support the disunity spread very quickly and the campaign fizzled out . From the recent posts on here this seems to be happening with the Pilots campaign. The workers united , will never be defeated. Is that how you Guys are ? I don't think so !

On departure - doors shut to seat belt sign off.

On arrival - cabin prep PA to the gate.

PAs are allowed to be made during this period depending on workload but AIPA has asked that the PIA PA (try saying THAT after a few drinks!) not be made. I imagine this is to prevent the company using the the 'blah blah blah impacting on safety blah blah' approach.

Cheers.

From today's SMH.

Pilot boast giving Qantas cabin fever

The ongoing industrial dispute between Qantas and its 1650 long-haul pilots has claimed its highest profile victim to date. The airline confirmed yesterday that it has started replacing a pre-flight safety video starring John Travolta.
Just five months since installing the clip hosted by the Saturday Night Fever star on its jets, Qantas has argued that it was never meant to be a permanent fixture.

"John Travolta's introduction to the in-flight safety video was an initiative to help draw attention to this vital safety information, building on his established relationship with Qantas,'' said an airline spokesman.

''It was always intended as a temporary feature and we are looking at working with other Qantas partners on similar initiatives in future."
But the pilots union sees another motive at play, given the similarity between Travolta's message in the video to its own.

In the safety video, Travolta says: ''There's no one I'd rather have at the controls than a Qantas pilot.''

The Australian & International Pilots Association's motto in its industrial campaign against Qantas sourcing lower-paid pilots from overseas is: ''When you board a Qantas flight, you expect a Qantas pilot.'' The association's vice-president, Richard Woodward, said: "Admittedly, the John Travolta in-flight video had its fair share of detractors, but the one line I think everyone agreed with was that there was no one you would rather have at the controls than a Qantas pilot. In simpler times, this would be an uncontroversial remark, but with Alan Joyce now eager to outsource Qantas pilot jobs overseas, well, suddenly Travolta is out of step with the chief executive officer.''

It is unclear whether the Qantas CEO Alan ''Tony Manero'' Joyce could star in a future Qantas safety clip.

Even with AJ on board

I take my hat off to the skipper of a QF flight last night, with no less than AJ himself on board, gave a polite, courteous and precise PIA announcement.
Keep it going guys, there is plenty of support behind you.

It will be interesting to see how well the QF pilots stick together. For years other pilot groups have been denigrated by them for accepting substandard conditions etc etc etc. Talk is cheap when you have not walked in the same shoes.

The possible offer of a transfer to Jetstar on LWOP is not a given for any individual. A selection/interview process is in place with a recent acceptance rate of around 25 percent.

Anyone individual who is seen to be militant or "not playing the company tune" is unlikely to be viewed with favour.

Welcome to the real world and good luck.

I'm told that the PA also was used on Clifford's flight from LAX on the weekend with some pax applauding - doubt he would have heard it in the safety of the first class seat.

Got to find the thread where there were some quotes from CC re Travolta video where the company rejected their issue and stated something about the value of using Travolta as the QF Ambassador..
