Alan Joyce Inside Business ABC 10:00 am Sun

Alan Kohler will interview AJ...

Lets see if Kohler wants to keep his QF club membership or not. Usually he is very biased towards AJ, so it will be interesting to see if he changes his views and provides a fair, unbiased even handed interview.

I won't hold my breath!

Looming redundancies.......well not really a surprise given the rest of whats going on at QF.

As expected a fluff piece from Alan Kohler.

Joyce Uncomfortable

Even though it was a soft interview Joyce fidgetted a couple of times, the glasses are gone and he looked away from the camera on at least two occasions. He is clearly not comfortable in front of the camera.

Did he say (at around 4min 20sec) that Jetstar has been supporting the QF international product? Yikes!

Yes, he was uncomfortable! He wouldn't answer a couple of the straight yes or no answers with a yes or no.... And after watching that I think we'll see redundancies in the pilot body and I guess by implication cabin crew and other international support areas too.

And no mention that the results of the PIA vote for Long Haul pilot will be known tomorrow.

Mind you, the results are probably a given.

"Jetstar is compensating QF INT".......then........QF DOM is most profitable in group followed by Jetstar. He liars and badly as Julia Gillard.

On another note, Jetstar CEO and family fly SYD-SIN in First class on QF. How come they didn't fly star class? This must be part of the 'subsidy'.

Probably because he knew flying Jetstar would land him with an Asian crew who have no idea who he is, sitting up the back of an A320 paying for his drink before changing planes in Darwin

This bloke is running Qantas? The guy presents terribly. JQ is the SECOND most profitable airline in Oz but is propping up QF International? Good Grief lets hope he goes before doing irreversible damage to the premium brand in Australia. It must be awful working for QF and being powerless to counter the negativity. Look at the difference between the Borghetti input and Joyce, I know who I would like my future as an employee to be tied with. All the QF unions need a unified front to shift this idiot and get someone with a vision and the nous to execute it.

QF Int and Jeystar Subsidies

Read the latest edition of Plane Talking at Crikey.com. That is an eye opener of the way they are charging FF points on Jetstar flights. We have no hope the end is near.

Dunno about that. I thought Joyce looked much less certain about things on Inside Business than he did at the Canberra lunch speech a few weeks ago.

As a small time investor in all sorts of companies, one thing that says the boss is in trouble is when he first makes bold statements about new directions, and then starts to tone it down the closer it gets to laying it on the line.

I think we are seeing signs of things not going his way in the board room.

Thumbs down

"Turdly.....some unions have a veto on Change"

Agree.....this Clown is getting worse. His "performance" on this show was below his Press Club rant.

To keep using the Aug 24 announcement as some sort of "magic dust" to suddenly fix everything ...shows that he is well out of his depth.

Time for the punt.

Here's his 4 pillars
Jetsar get new Asia base and investment
Emirates get it's pilots and it's routes
VR for remaining pilots

Love the touch about his current investment of uncomfortable and ****e lounges and ridiculously unfriendly self checkin...

Of course he had to say that tiger shouldn't send it's planes back to Asia and should persevere by spending millions to get the ball rolling again. Because if they do send their planes back it would throw a spanner in the works for his Asian sensation he will announce.

Heres 4 things which should happen
Accc and friends chase him up for price fixing and misrepresentation as to the financials of international and jetstar.
Tiger start back up again - jetstar now grounded
1500 hr rule comes in - all cadets moved to qantaslink...

I almost dislike our pollies as much as this clown.. But at least they can do circus tricks...

10 years ago were saying that Qantas would not be a domestic airline any longer .....
And 10 years later, the most profitable carrier operating in the domestic market is now Qantas because we turned it around ...
This is the second time I've heard AJ something along these lines, he said something similar at the Press Club. Isn't this implying that 10 years ago QF Domestic was underperforming. Which completely contradicts this quote :

Needless to say though, we do have an issue on international. The issue has been there for some time. The international business has not been performing at the levels it needs to. And over the years we've compensated by that by having a very strong domestic business, having a very strong frequent flyer business.
Also, from a few annual reports

2000 : EBIT - QF Int $374m QF Dom $272m

2001 :
Qantas International operations continued to make a strong contribution to the Group’s performance during the year, with earnings before interest and tax rising 22.4 per cent to $458.7 million
2002 & 2003 : Both shocking years for International due 9/11, SARS and the Iraq war. QF Int still managed to make $200m each year.

So exactly over which years has QF Int been "compensated" by other parts of the business? Why wasn't this brought to shareholders attention at the time? In fact, were shareholders being mislead by the relevant Annual Reports? And if this has been a problem for years, why is management only doing something about it now?

If any journos read Pprune, please start asking the hard questions!

Xcel

Morning Xcel,

Could I ask why you think all Cadets should go to Qantaslink - EAA/SSQ?

This is a common point raised by many on this forum and I am curious as to why you think it would be better for them and most of all SAFER for the travelling public.

Having operated in the Qantaslink - EAA/SSQ environment for over 13 years I would suggest that an operation with high workload short sectors, minimal automation ( no Autothrottle etc) , poor procedures and the LOWEST experience base seen in any generation of aviation.................would not be the best place to put cadets.

I welcome thoughts on this point.
