An Open Letter to Messrs Joyce, Clifford and Wilson

Dear Sirs

Like you, I am most concerned at the prospect of industrial action by Qantas’ long haul pilots. Like most of my colleagues, I never wanted or expected to be involved in such action when I joined the company, yet I have just voted in favour of it. Since you seem to be having trouble understanding why I would do this, let me clarify a few points.

Captain Wilson, you have threatened that should industrial action proceed, the long-standing relationship between management and QF pilots will change forever. I understand that you have also recently stated that: Alan Joyce does not want to get rid of mainline pilots; that the first 15 787's will go to Jetstar and the rest will come to Qantas, i.e. mainline; and that you do not want the 787's flown under a separate contract. It is wonderful to receive such assurances. I will add them to the list of other assurances we have received over the last decade, all of which have unfortunately proven to be untrue.

Let’s face it, Captain Wilson: for years now we have been lied to, insulted (”I don’t want mainline pilots polluting the culture of Jetstar” – A. Joyce) and marginalized. You will doubtless argue otherwise, but I believe that senior management has acted in a consistently dishonourable fashion towards the pilots of this company. The recent dishonest leaks to the media are merely a continuation of this. If the forthcoming industrial action forever changes our relationship with management, then it can’t come soon enough as far as I’m concerned.

Mr Joyce, you have talked of ‘rogue unions’ and ‘kamikazes’. The BLF was a rogue union. We are not the BLF. We are a bunch of loyal and dedicated professionals who have taken no industrial action for the last 45 years. We are not ‘kamikazes’. If we were, then we might do such as things as constantly talking the company down in public, colluding in a hostile takeover for our own financial gain, willfully neglecting the core business in favour of low-cost startups, and stubbornly persisting with strategies that plainly are not working.

The prospect of industrial action greatly concerns me, Mr Joyce, but what option do we have? Having already seen any prospect of career progression almost disappear, we now realize that our very jobs are under threat. The company is fond of stating that no Qantas pilot has been made redundant in 40 years. Let’s not forget that a couple of years ago, there was a real threat that around 70 pilots would be made redundant unless savings of $8 million were found. We came up with the $8 million, not realizing in our naivety that there must have been a remaining bare corner of Geoff Dixon’s pool room which still needed to be submerged under piles of cash. Now we have a situation where numerous routes have been handed off to other Qantas group entities and there is a management-generated surplus of pilots. Should the 787s be crewed externally, and should ‘Qantasia’ take over more mainline flying, this surplus would be in the hundreds. Mr Joyce, you have created a situation where we have no choice but to take action, and nothing much to lose by doing so (apart from our ‘long-standing relationship with management’, which I think we’ve established we can do without).

Mr Clifford, you have said that you “don’t know what planet these people are on”. Well, we’re on a planet where through the actions of management, our career progression has vanished and our jobs are under threat. We’re on a planet where a once-great brand has been neglected and devalued. We’re on a planet where management continually cries poor and accepts no responsibility for its failures, yet rewards itself handsomely.

That’s the planet we’re on. It’s called ‘Earth’. What planet are you on, Mr Clifford?

Yours sincerely, etc

Well Said. AJ hates his staff almost as much as he despises his clients. I used to work for jokestar in the early days, and his miss management of staff taught me exactly how not to treat my own staff.

Thanks for the lesson AJ, and to all you Qantas people, I am sorry but you cannot win against such an evil power.

Good managers know that staff are their biggest asset.

AJ I have a book for you -- go read Good Boss Bad Boss. You might learn a thing or two.

The Judas effect..

A very measured letter. I thought you could have gone further but not being a pilot I will defer to your assessment.

We all know the demise of our once great company has been orchestrated by those very individuals charged with the task of ensuring her survival and prosperity! Traitors!!

At least the biblical Judas took his 30 pieces of silver and quickly rid the world of his presence!

A excellent letter, and it is becoming very obvious that Clifford is the largest problem that QF has. He has been there consistently as QF continues to deteriorate. He is the one consistent spoke in the wheel, and with probably a shake up of the board as Cosgrove is expected to be a shoe in for the NSW State Governor's job, the question is how the hell do you get rid of a board member?

The term 'Asset Stripping' comes to mind, where a bunch of people with no great affinity for, or history with, a company sell it off for what they can get, stuff their pockets full and piss off.

The fact that they will have overseen the destruction of the Australian flag carrier and it's loyal employees will not bother them at all as they sit back on their yachts secure in the knowledge that they, Jack, are all right. Only their personal success was ever their target.

I think that's the most from the heart starter post I have ever read in here, well done The real people out there appreciate it am sure

I don't work for QF (another Airline but we all share the same passion) but I have been in the industry for some time now & I've never seen it so fractured/disengaged as it is now. A hand full of very sad people are pulling down what was once a great company. It will be a very sad day when/if QF is no longer, remember QF really belongs to all Aussies, the name that is. We are a very proud nation us 'ockers' none prouder I reckon but we are on our knees right now with this & i wish & pray that all QF employees (the real QF is the employees not the goons at the top)can some day have peace in their lives. My heartfelt thoughts go out to all who aspire to be far greater than those that are wrecking this once great Co

Well said Snuffelupagas. It is indeed a pity this open letter was not a true open letter and published in the media signed by all Qantas pilots.

Parabellum makes a good point. The Chairman sets the KPI's for the CEO. If he, the CEO, delivers he will get his bonus just as Geoff did. KPI's may not always be what we want to hear or see. If 'Destroy Qantas' and 'Lie to the shareholders, the public and the staff' are among AJ's KPI's he is on target for a great payout.

It is a tragedy that a former Australian of the Year is sitting on the Qantas Board providing oversight and governance for the shareholders as a true Australian icon and Internationally recognised airline spins uncontrollably in its death dive. And he is doing nothing about it - a true Australian of the Year would speak up.

It is also tragic that so many former Ansett senior managers are sitting in top QF anf JQ roles. They must know the pain of that failure. The suffering of so many great, loyal employees. A free lesson for Qantas not learnt.

AJ is the first non Australian to occupy the CEO role. A believer in conspiracy theory might suggest that the Australians deliberately did this. Or was the appontment of AJ just a straight out 'fcuk up'. A bridge too far for a little inexperience boy.

Gold

The OP and thread is gold, I am not in mainline but will do all I can to get the message out, it's the least I or anyone with common sense could do. I agree with parabellum,
The term 'Asset Stripping' comes to mind, where a bunch of people with no great affinity for, or history with, a company sell it off for what they can get, stuff their pockets full and piss off.
This whole issue does my head in, for the record, just look at the background of some of the board,
(my bold.)

Mr Clifford is a Director of Bechtel Group Inc. He is Chairman of Bechtel Australia Pty Ltd and the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, a Senior Advisor to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co and a Board Member of the National Gallery of Victoria Foundation. Mr Clifford was previously a Director of Barclays Bank plc. Mr Clifford was Chief Executive of Rio Tinto from 2000 to 2007. He retired from the Board of Rio Tinto in 2007 after serving as a Director of Rio Tinto plc and Rio Tinto Limited for 13 and 12 years respectively. His executive and board career with Rio Tinto spanned some 37 years, in Australia and overseas.
Mrs Cross is a Director of National Australia Bank Limited, JBWere Pty Limited, the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, the Grattan Institute and the Methodist Ladies College. She is a Member of the Government's Australian Financial Centre Forum and Melbourne University's Advisory Council to the Faculty of Business and Economics.
Mrs Cross was previously a director of Wesfarmers Limited, Chairman of Qantas Superannuation Limited and Deputy Chairman of Victoria's Transport Accident Commission. She has served on a variety of publicly listed, government, university and private company boards.
Prior to becoming a professional company director in 1996, Mrs Cross held senior executive positions with Chase Manhattan Bank, Banque Nationale de Paris and National Australia Bank.
Garry Hounsell was appointed to the Qantas Board in January 2005.
He is Chairman of the Audit Committee and a Member of the Nominations Committee.
Mr Hounsell is Chairman of PanAust Limited and a Director of Orica Limited, DuluxGroup Limited and Nufarm Limited. He is Chairman of Investec Global Aircraft Fund, a Director of Ingeus Limited and a Board Member of law firm Freehills.
Mr Hounsell is the former Deputy Chairman of Mitchell Communication Group Limited. He is a former Senior Partner of Ernst & Young and Chief Executive Officer and Country Managing Partner of Arthur Andersen.
John Schubert was appointed to the Qantas Board in October 2000.
He is Chairman of the Safety, Health, Environment and Security Committee and a Member of the Nominations Committee.
Dr Schubert is a Director of BHP Billiton Limited and BHP Billiton plc. He is also Chairman of G2 Therapies Limited and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
He was most recently Chairman of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia
Barbara Ward was appointed to the Qantas Board in June 2008.
She is a Member of the Safety, Health, Environment and Security Committee and the Audit Committee.
Ms Ward is Chairman of Country Energy, a Director of a number of Brookfield Multiplex Group companies and O'Connell Street Associates Pty Ltd, and is on the Advisory Board of LEK Consulting.
She was formerly a Director of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Lion Nathan Limited, Brookfield Multiplex Limited, Allco Finance Group Limited, Record Investments Limited, Data Advantage Limited, Rail Infrastructure Corporation and Delta Electricity. She was Chairman of NorthPower and a Board Member of Allens Arthur Robinson.
Ms Ward was Chief Executive Officer of Ansett Worldwide Aviation Services from 1993 to 1998. Before that, Ms Ward held various positions at TNT Limited, including General Manager Finance, and also served as a Senior Ministerial Adviser to The Hon PJ Keating.
These people have a very dodgy background in aviation, for me, just damn bankies. They also appear to spend so much of their time on other boards, eg Mrs Cross you wonder if she has any time for Q. It appears their egos are as big as their bonus schemes. A bankie boys and girls club.

Thanks for the inspiration snuffelupagus. May the force be with you, in fact all of the Q pilots.

Well done, its sad these things seem to fall on deaf ears.

Professional "Board Sitters" are a group of high end individuals who get paid to attend meeting's (luncheons) every few months and collect a fee for service. To get invited to sit on a board you generally know someone from another board. Weird stuff really, these guys/gals probably don't even think about Qantas unless they are travelling (FREE) or thinking of excuses not to attend the board meeting.

Its great that you have highlighted all the board members here. It would be good to get their names out in the public and link them to the destruction of the brand.

Shame, shame, shame to you all.....

Would that be the same James Strong who sits on QAN board and Woolies?
Wonder "what sort of value was released to the shareholders by the tie up??

That's right we wouldn't know, whether Qantas could have done better with another chain..Rather hard to sit on both sides of transactions.

Jimmy Bow tie's son is an industrial lawyer with Freehills...gets interesting!

Wasn't Peter Gregg CFO of Qantas whilst JHAS was trying to outbid QAN engineers for work? On both sides again.

Great letter, and great bolding from tima9x. Ms Wards Allco failure should be highlighted along with Ansett on her resume. A kindergarten class would make better decisions than this lot.

Excellent letter, snuffelupagus, unfortunately it will have no effect on Clifford, as will become obvious below.

Bechtel is the company that tried to privatise the Bolivian water resources for their profit at the expense of the poor. A quote from "

The citizens of Cochabamba rebelled. Boycotts shut down the city for four straight days in January 2000. Mobs threatened to storm SEMAPA's offices. Bechtel demanded protection. Bolivian President Hugo Banzar acquiesced and mobilizied the army. In the violence that followed, dozens of Aymara and Quechua were wounded and a seventeen-year-old boy was shot to death.

Fearing a full blown revolution, President Banzar finally imposed martial law. Then, after reportedly meeting with US embassy officials, he announced that he would nullify the Bechtel contract. In April 2000 Bechtel abandoned its operations at SEMAPA

This dovetails nicely with a quote I read last night
"As a former consultant to Fortune 500 companies, I observed that if the leadership of a company was financially reckless or had a moral disregard for its workers, this same behaviour could be found reflected thoughout all the remaining layers of the company"

So this is what we are dealing with, asset strippers (KKR) & looters (Bechtel) who attempt to create tyranny & steal from the productive. "These people" have to understand, than we know what your up to, that's right Leigh, we are on to you. You can thank the Internet for your loss of power. We are a learning organism, we are levering our vast numerical advantage over you to create a knowledge base that could not have existed even 15 years ago. We will fight you all the way, we will expose you and your nefarious connections. You may think we are stupid, but some of us read history & can connect the dots. We are not just numbers on a balance sheet, and we are fighting back.

We are dealing with "These people" who would steal the water right out of your mouth.

edit: Leigh Clifford relationship map to Bechtel. (Double click on Bechtel to expand its relationships to others & see how it fits into the big picture. A very tangled web indeed)

Well said BB,

And what did the Bolivian government eventually do?
Rather the same thing that happened with ANZ. Public goods were provided when deemed essential, not profitable, yet necessary to the national interest. Water would definitely fall into that, so does health and transport infrastructure.
What private firm would build an airport? They won't build them but their natural monopoly makes them perfect to buy from cash strapped governments.

Then the neo-conservatives got into it, and include Mac bank. Let's not forget project suzie.......

Agree 100%! Well written and to the point!

Doubt whether management is going to listen, though, as they surely would have already been made aware of the problems...

Maybe we'll improve their hearing with a YES vote!

This is a great letter indeed....

What is really clear to me, coming from outside the business and a relatively new employee, is that I have never worked for a company where management say they will do things and they never happen.

I feel like I am in a constant state of being placated and when you follow up..no response EVER..... I have been promised all manner of things in the past few years none of which have EVER materialised but they seem to promise they will do it....

I have never worked for a company that is so daft in the way they treat top performing staff. I feel for the pilots....PLEASE STRIKE!!!

These idiots are playing games with you and in their typical arrogance they don't think you will take action.....
