NZ Aircraft Hijacker gets 9yr sentence
From today's NZ Herald:
Nine years jail for plane hijacker - National - NZ Herald News
Extract:
A Somali woman was today jailed for nine years for New Zealand's only in-flight aircraft hijacking which terrified passengers and crew and ended a pilot's career.
Think I'd rather her do a few years and then deport her arse out with a lifetime ban on returning.

From the extract;
"she became very unstable after her sister was taken away - she described herself as a crazy person - and decided to take a plane to get to Australia."
Hope not - we already got enuf 'crazies' here .........
Deportation back to her 'home country' sounds good.
Sorry to hear about the pilot who has had to 'give it away' following the incident.
Pity he couldn't take civil action and sue the last cent out of her...the

9 years is suley not enough. It should have been a lot longer.
The J31/32 being a 19 seater plus the 2 crew she could have been responsible for 21 deaths !
Attacking a flt crew member should be a 20 year minimum.

Although I agree with the above, 9 years is one of the stiffer sentences handed down for what I'd describe as a serious crime in NZ these days.
Typically sentences handed down fall well short of the maximum. Often to the outrage and disgust of those directly affected by the crime.

Accountability for your actions - that's what is should be about, but the legal system seems to overlook that when announcing sentences. Too much emphasis placed on irrelevant factors that seem to underpin inadequate penalties.

Given NZ's liberal attitude towards crims I'm surprised she didn't get an all expenses paid round the world holiday and a million bucks for the suffering she suffered in her homeland.

Aussie hijacks
Personally, I'm in favour of the system applied to hijackers in Australia. Of the three instances I can recall, two of them were shot dead on the spot by police. There's a fair chance it's one the main reasons we have so few hijacks. Catch 'em in the act? Deal with them.

I agree with SQ2000 ( as usual!) sure she should definitely do some serious time.. keeping in mind she didn't fit in in NZ, and, doesn't seem to want to be there.. If the Political situation has improved in her homeland.. surly she can be sent back there after doing a few years crime.
Then we don't have to worry about her again.. and wont be spending 100,000's of thousands to keep her in N.Z. worrying about a repeat offense.
