I can see the pros and cons of both sides. But I still see it as a great opportunity to get your foot in the door if your wanting to become a pilot.

I sent my application in last week and recieved a call over the weekend and am heading down to melbourne this week for the testing side of things.

Has anyone else recieved a call etc.?

As I posted earlier, I got the call on Saturday...its from OAA, not Jetstar. I'm scheduled for the 11.30am session at YMMB however I'm about to send off an email declining.

Yes theoretically its a good way to get into an airline however the cost plus moving my family down to Melb and then living off $55k with possible minor jumps for 4-5 years isn't worth it.

Funny though...I wonder how many cadets will be left in 6 years and 6 months? (ie. there would probably be a mass resignation to join the likes of CPA or EK after the bond is up).

Read the fine print carefully......... and if you can cover the financial side of the scheme then go for it. I completed a similar scheme, did my time to cover my bond on reduced wages (more than my mates were getting in GA though) and then jumped ship to a Major. As long as you do your research then there won't be too many suprises along the way and it can be a great start into the industry. Don't worry about all the grumpy 'you are trying to short cut the system' comments. This is the way of the world now and I am suprised it has taken Australasia so long to catch up. For those of you that do it, good luck. CTC have a very good rep over in the UK for turning out quality cadets, so enjoy.

As for all the GA drivers who are upset about this scheme, I can't quite understand the logic. Surely GA has been doing this for decades, undercutting wages and conditions and giving the job to the pilot willing to work for the least amount. I went overseas for that exact reason, I was not willing to 'work for free' to gain my hours and experience, so I left. Kind of ironic now that those who have done exactly that in GA are telling people to not accept such a bad deal for the good of the industry....bizzarre!

Great post BreakfastBurrito. You hit the nail on the head, and many of the reasons why I got out of the industry.
I love flying and was passionate about it, but could see that the industry takes more from you than it gives.
I do a job now that I really like, am I passionate about it, probably not, but passion can be a dangerous thing.
Passion is something that airline management like to take advantage of.

Before spending a lot of money going down this path of flying as a career (Cadetship), find some older guys who have been around at get some
feedback about it. I learnt the hard way, went the GA route, got kicked from pillar to post, and that was 10 +plus years ago.
I think the industry has got nastier since then. PLEASE, PLEASE don't be dazzled by the shiny Jets and the romance of it all.

I never made it to the airlines, GA was enough, but I have friends who went on and now fly jets, and what is the constant thing I hear back from them
now. "At the end of the day it is just a job". You can never get back those special moments with family and loved ones. And mark my words, I have mates
that have put the last 20 yrs into flying at the expense of everything else. These friends find themselves in their 40's, and have no wife, no kids, no one to share
special moments with. I hear you say thank God, no wife, no kids etc, but from what they tell me the shiny Jet doesn't fill the void in their life created by giving everything to Flying.

This post might be too harsh, but something needs to counter balance the carrots that these airlines are now dangling. I also know most you 20 something's
think I am a rambling fool, and can't understand what i am talking about. Unfortunately, not many young pilots learn from the mistakes or experiences of others,
they need to find out for themselves. PLEASE THINK REALLY hard before entering one of these programs, it might just cost you alot more than $$$ at the end of the day.

Whatever you do, just try and keep a balance in your lives, too much of one thing is never a good thing.

AH

I think the difference between this scheme and first or second GA jobs is that this is it in Australia. Jetstar IS the end of the rainbow for most people - unless you want to move overseas, which is also becoming less attractive by the day. What Major Airline are people going to move to once they realise the true value of their skills and ongoing sacrifices? Qantas don’t look like hiring so that is not a realistic option.

I agree with your sentiments regarding GA, but you have to draw the line somewhere.

Once again, I have nothing against anyone who applies. I can just see the long term implications of this particular scheme in Australia.

So Artificial horizon you bought yourself a job because you weren't competitive then left the company then came to australia and now you are probably still an fo. Are you even a citizen of australia? And how much do you earn?

You're a jetstar co pilot right? Hardly a major achievement. Most semi skilled secretaries probably earns more than you. Congratulations!!

BTW just because scumbag euro airlines do it doesn't make it the way of the world you loser.

Wow there sure are some keyboard warriors on here.

I applied for the ab-initio program, sent my application in on last Thursday night and got a call Sunday. It was OAA that called, not Jetstar.

Good luck to any one else trying out, might see you down there

Oxidant,
Don't wave your finger at me if all you can come up with is an unpunctuated phrase and two emoticons you arrogant prig.

Lets put it this way a jetstar fo with a wife 2 kids and a $5k credit card has a borrowing capacity of about $250k to buy a house to live in... That will get you a ****ty flat somewhere like Moe or Melton. Thanks but no thanks!

Ha ha ha...

Actually I am quite comfortable with my situation, I left NZ because I wasn't inclined to work for free. In the UK I was offered a cadetship for a small airline which meant that they would 'front-up' for my conversion costs in return for a significant time commitment (bond). I then beat a lot of other candidates to secure a highly desired job at a legacy carrier where I was fat dumb and happy until life in the UK became too much of a chore, thankfully by that stage (thanks to the cadetship) I could choose to stay in the UK or move back home (or at least close to it). To be honest I wasn't hell bent on taking a flying job back here as the mentality here does drive me a bit mad, but having been offered a jet job it was a good way to get back home. As for still being an FO... not necessarily. I am not saying these schemes are without problems, all I am saying is that for the right candidate it can be a 'valid' way pursuing a career in flying.

I am going to apply for the ACP and have 2 options for the provider of the endorsement.

Oxford or CTC. The website says to choose carefully as you can only apply to one of them. Does anyone know what the difference is?

Will it determine your base and conditions?

I chose CTC because its a shorter course (slightly) and slightly less cost. But I am and Australian and CTC makes a lot of reference to NZ.
