Quick answer to the above mentioned article. Pacific Brands were not looking at scaling back production. Qantas is looking at scaling back flights. Pacific brands was MOVING jobs offshore. Qantas is not. Infact, as far as engineering goes, they have pulled out of the Malaysian joint venture, effectively thwarting plans to offshore some work.
What Aussies don't want to see at the moment, is opportunistic attempts to screw over Aussie workers as Pacific brands are doing. It is understandable that Qantas would be doing it tough now and I think Alan Joyce's response so far has been reasonable (Thank F#%ck Dixon went when he did). Is Qantas saving its customers money right now? Yes. Check ticket prices and you will find some very competitive deals compared to what we have seen from Qantas in the past.
Pacific brands however, appear to be taking the opportunity to replace Aussies with lower paid overseas workers. Will this cost saving be passed on to its customers? No.
Snouts in the trough at Pacific Brands, as Qantas was under Dixon.

But VB had a huge loss last year, whe trading was much better than this year
so maybe there will some news shortly about VB and its trading.
Yes QF is having a downturn but will still have a profit this year.
VB is in line for a second year of huge losses.

I received an email from the shorthaul FAAA yesterday with an update as to our current situation. It stated the following:
The impact on crew both Short Haul and Long Haul is still being assessed. By way of explanation, at the initial meetings we were considering the publicly announced reduction in forecast flying and its impact on the Short Haul establishment, only to be told at a subsequent meeting that the flying split between the divisions may need to be reviewed.
Therefore, before any constructive discussions can occur on measures to be taken to manage any demonstrated surplus it is crucial that flying changes forecast over the next twelve months between both divisions be clearly defined.
Does anyone know exactly what this means? Are shorthaul to get a larger proportion of the overall flying pool, which will eliminate our surplus, or are we to lose domestic flying to longhaul to help with their surplus? Since both divisions are currently managing a surplus of crew, any extra flying to one group could only make the other group's situation worse. It makes me wonder where things are heading?

Damn, 500 managers. It sounds like they are over managed and understaffed, with the people who do the day to day work.
Great opportununity to downsize qantas. When things improve they can expand the cheaper jetstar.

Be interesting to see if QF make a profit at all - considering they have a hefty liability regarding the topping up of super!

Why don't you guys have a nice sleep in on Sunday morning, take your dog or whatever for walk, get a nice fresh loaf or buns from the bakery, maybe some milk and the Sunday papers.

Watched AJ on the above program.........He stated that ones of his tasks was to get the Engineers engaged........Well AJ, take note - the engineers will never, ever be engaged when Engineering has such a moronic, top heavy, management team that deserves ( and gets) zero respect.
