Pilot shortages disrupt Qantas
18 Feb 2008 | By Vesna Poljak
Qantas Airways has started cancelling flights on regional routes as an industry-wide shortage of pilots begins to affect the carrier.

Any truth to this from those in the know?

Pilot shortages disrupt Qantas
18 Feb 2008 | By Vesna Poljak
Qantas Airways has started cancelling flights on regional routes as an industry-wide shortage of pilots willing to work their ar5es off for peanuts begins to affect the carrier.
That should be.

Of course they're talking about QFLink!

Eventually, and not too far down the track the shortage will affect mainline, and most other domestic carriers. To what extent, will be up to management.

By that time QFLink and just about every other Regional airline will be stuffed! To what extent, will be up to management.

A fix for this whole mess isn't forthcoming in the near future. I dread the thought that it will get a whole lot worse before we see an end or even an improvement to the 'recession we had to have', brought on by poor planning via treating their assets (pilots) with contempt from the majors, in aviation terms that is !

THE AUSTRALIAN FINANCIAL REVIEW 18 FEB-- Qantas Airways regional offshoot, QantasLink, said it was making "temporary adjustments" on some of its routes as a pilot shortage began to affect operations. The carrier said the pilot scarcity was both a result of the brisk growth of the sector and poaching within the industry. The Australian and International Pilots Association blamed the situation on a lack of planning by QantasLink.
QLink is cropping up more and more in the news. Looks like management incompetance cant be hidden for too much longer. I love how Qlink is using the "poaching" line like Rex did!

I find it quite interesting that so far nothing has been mentioned about SkyWest. Guess they are doing things right there, fast upgrades, good money, bit of a bugger the house prices soared, oh well, apart from that, good gig.Happy campers in the West!!

I am not familiar the last few years but I know Skywest has always treated its staff very well in the past. Maybe that has something to do with it. All the guys / gals I knew flying with them loved it. Companies can always make short term gain but if you screw staff enough it is long term pain! (not that it matters for idiotic managers who cycle through companies like snails when the rain falls!)

Maybe more than 300

I am new to all this, but would QF mainline be losing some numbers to the sand bowl and the like?? Also, what about the smaller number of medically unables???? Might have to up-date the resume and see how she flys!!

i know many pilots at skywest and they have nothing but good things to say about the company.

i recon a few of them would be happy to see their career out at skywest, and these guys are new in the industry.

another side note for skywest. they have the best inflight service on their F100's (havent flown on their F50's). really polite, always helping and the leg room is amazing. many thumbs up for the entire operation.

I too have always heard good things about Skywest in terms of pilot retention and staff morale. Although lately, the expansion that they are undergoing may see things start to change with respect to their recruiting.

Pilot training costs must be massive as they always start people on the 50 then on and around to different positions from there. People are being eligible for progression within six months even though "frozen". The one intake of direct entry jet slots wasn't that well received by some, but apparently they are going to have to do it again as their needs on the 100 and then into the 320 are massively higher than the 50 crew requirements.

These difficult issues have an effect on morale and hopefully it will be well mananged so that the good reputation that they have in that regard will continue. We don't need more Rex and QLink's, we need more Skywest type employers out there...

flyitboy,

I suspect it is simply an application culling technique that is yet to catch up with the fact that application culling is no longer required!

With this blatant show of brilliant management coming from QantasLink ,I'd say old Kumura (or whatever his troops call him behind his back) would be a shoe in to takeover from old scrotum face when he leaves!

Flyitboy,

What do you mean "just a Dash", us Dash boys and girls will get all offended if you are not to carefull.

Maybe they want us to have passed HSC so we can understand every thing written in those big manuals?

You're right - HSC does mean bugger all these days. Consequently, someone who has not completed this elementary level of study may not be a suitable employee???

Or perhaps if someone did really want the job, they may have allocated some of the years it takes to become qualified for airline employment to complete one of the elementary bridging courses, rather than bitching about the fact that they shouldn't need to (despite the fact that basic maths, physics and english are used constantly in this profession).

Just one perspective - whether a sixth grader would understand I don't know.

Kids - stay in school!!!

Does anyone know if QLink are considering employing any DEC's at all, MEL base actually??
Just wondering if they were really short or not.....
