That's great you got 2000 hours on twins but what type of twin are you flying?
Are you flying a turboprop, king air, metro or C441 size?

I knew a bloke in the past who was just an instructor for four years and was knocked back by QF, he then got himself a light jet endorsement and worked for a freight company, then ended up in Asia on the A340.
Another example, i have come across two different people in the past, both were instructors and both ended up in QF, one of them had a uni degree, which gave him the edge over others.

In my opinion, if you got yourself a B737-800 or A320 type rating, that could place you in a more favourable position, even if you don't end up flying that particular equipment, the transition to a totally different aircraft type will be simple.
I believe a person should continue to invest in their future and be up to date with the glass cockpit, jet operations (at least simulator), understand operations of advanced aircraft systems, to increase their skill and knowledge.
To achieve a B738 or A320 type rating requires a lot of skill and effort from an individual, it's not a Dash 8 or Second Officer role.

You could have contacted the company flying the Emb135/145 on the east coast, if accepted, then self fund a type rating and move up into a higher class of operation.
It's a great job, got to think outside the box and globally.

Don't forget you're not the only person with a pilot's licence, a pilot licence holder is no different to being a driver on the road, you're not the only one.

No this is just the way airlines in Australia treat people.
Qantas has a grading system where you are given a "rating" and then anyone who has been placed on the hold file with you can jump you if they score better at assessment.
Half of Qlinks hold file is in the USA.

I get that, but the person I was responding to that had a bunch of hours that wasn’t hired or offered an interview or whatever, there is usually another reason when hiring is going crazy.

So what you’re saying is he/she should buy their way in to Qlink with a self funded 737/A320 rating?

In the middle of the largest national and global pilot shortage (which will only get worse) when this pay for an endorsement rot which Jetstar pilots started should finally be nipped in the bud, and your advice is for pilots looking for a turboprop job is to go and buy a jet endo to jump their mates in the queue?

Worst advice I’ve read on PPrune in 5 years.

We wonder why we can’t seem to advance our terms and conditions with comments like this.

My advice would be to hang in there, keep working on getting night/IF hours, keep updating your resume. Consider emailing them and asking what area you could work on the most to improve your chances of progressing out of the hold.

And while you’re waiting, there’s lots of other good places to crack your first multicrew turbine job. And some of them might actually be a better option than QLink if you ultimately aspire to another Q group airline, because you won’t get trapped in this “non-existent” embargo which seems to disadvantage people already in the group from progressing up.

Before the sim ride we were told as a group they were particularly looking for very experienced people as they had a lot of freshly minted skippers and therefore wanted people to hit the ground running. They also said the feedback from the training captains were a lot of new first officers had poor instrument flying skills and therefore they prefer solid IFR experience.

From my group they knocked back people with considerable multi IFR experience or put them on hold for eternity. People with 3-5000 hours. Two had experience on king airs or metros. Yet they have taken people with bare instrument ratings and less than 1000 hours.

So in a lot of cases they are hiring the complete opposite to what they say they want. The place is run like a government department. Don't waste your time with them.

If you are really on the ‘hold file’ for QLink after 18 months, you should be thanking your lucky stars and look elsewhere.
Fixed it for you.

There are current FO's at Qlink who were on the hold file for over two years. They treat you badly like this so that you're used to it by the time you join!

I left there late last year, and they were experiencing 30% pilot turnover per year for the previous two years. Some were "allowed" to go to mainline/Jetstar, but the ONLY reason there was any progression allowed was to attempt to stem the flow of pilots to other carriers. Since I left there have been plenty others leave, some to Emirates, some to Virgin, and even one to Virgin to fly the ATR!

The pilots who are left get flogged. Right now pilots are leaving as fast as they can be replaced. Nothing will change until they pay their guys/gals more and give them more time off.

Last I heard, new joiners cannot progress to another part of the group for 24 months. If your aim is to fly for Q-mainline, apply to Rex.

To enable a type rating to be inked in your license, you have to earn it, you cannot buy it off a shelf as in a supermarket.

Flying an A320 or B737, B717, Emb 135/145, is all glass cockpit and multi crew, it's different to what you're doing now, although you're quite a competent pilot.

If you get into QF then they'll train you but quite a number of persons these days, fund their own type rating just to improve their future job prospects.

I'm surprised you haven't applied to the U.S airlines in this day and age, it's such a small aviation market here.
It doesn't sound as if you have ambitions to fly for a carrier outside of OZ at the moment.

Hahah. Really?? Ringing them with what phone numbers mate?

I've heard from a couple of people that have been there for 2 years and can't go to other parts of the group as you say. Only option is to leave and try through a different company.

Sort of happy at this point to see how things go and what other offerings are about.

Totally agree with /\ Neville.

In the qlink trainee etc thread someone said that going to the USA to fly regional jets would hurt your chances of getting a job in ML Q. Thier advice, stick with the qlink application.

I asked why it would hurt having multicrew, turbofan, 45t experience.......

Crickets.

Basic business sense says to poach from other carriers......rather than. Train your own.

I got over 2000 hours TT no incidents or accidents, meet all the requirements for ATPL along with the theory subs, applied to Qantas group about 11 months ago. Still waiting for a reply.. well not anymore, got tired and tried my luck at another airline and got in. So go figure......

You’re still maintaining someone who’s IN a hold pool for a Dash 8 slot should go and piss away 30k on a jet endorsement?

Has anyone gone thru the qlink requirement process lately and willing to share what questions are being asked, such as Tec and personality and what the Sim is like.

I took your advice Slippery Pete and went to bed early after reading all the reviews.
Point taken.
Tommy, i noticed on the facebook page of a major operator in the Centre, that a
person got into Qlink, having flown the same aircraft as yourself.

You will no doubt be very close to getting called soon.
A lot of people would love being in your position and operating the equipment that you do.

If you went to the U.S, they will probably roll out the red carpet for you with your experience levels.
You know yourself you have available options everywhere.
