Emerald Isle

A Melbourne ALM is going in about 3 weeks. Work Enroute ATC at Shannon. Not much (if any) pay increase in it. Going for life experience and has had enough of ASA.

I amazed at your naivety, do you seriously think that moving to a foreign country, where dare I suggest you dont speak the language, have never lived before and will be at best 24 hours away from friends and family that 'LIFE' not work - is going to be better?

Do you live to work or work to live?

If you are going for a lifestyle change - then great and I think you will have the best time of your LIFE - dont be confused into thinking that DFS are going to be all warm and fuzzy and make you Heiße Schokolade when you are not happy with work (or buy you a Kaffee every Wednesday Morning mind you its probably free all the time there!).....

Think carefully why you are going, what you are leaving and what you may never come back to....

Oh and feel free to leave the light on when you go.....

The standard positive and encouraging post from Traffic Traffic.

Are you related to En-Rooter by any chance?

I have worked in both Ireland and Germany [and Switzerland, UK, Belgium, Middle East etc etc].

Those thinking of going to Shannon - nice centre, sh*t load of traffic onto and off the North Atlantic, makes Australian sectors seem tame - BUT you need to live in Ireland, and it can be pricy [read dollar for Euro - i.e. if something costs a dollar here, it would be a Euro there] and the tax regime is not as 'user friendly' as here. Cost of living is a little higher all round [fuel is horendously expensive!] - AND you need to learn to drink - the guys at Shannon centre can drink!!

Those thinking of going to Germany - particulary if you go to Frankfurt or Karlsruhe - traffic again is VERY heavy, and VERY constant, but rewarding. Military traffic is a PITA. You will need some German - and will need to be fluent to work on certain domestic sectors - GA are allowed to speak German in domestic airspace. Cost of living in Germany is like Ireland - dollar for Euro. Bureaucracy is hard to work out at first - but not impossible.

Better option than Germany might be Eurocontrol at Maastricht - but you'd need a link to one of the member States to get a job - unless you backdoor it by going to a non-operational position first - work for a year, then go in as a Eurocontrol employee.

UK also has some private airport options if you are tower and/or approach rated. Problem is there is a catch-22 - you need to have UK endorsements - but you can't get them unless you work there - and you can't work there without them! Again there is a backdoor - see if you can find an airport that is willing to sponsor you through a short-term [8 week] training course. You could also go direct to the several training orgs, but you'd need to pay for the course yourself. UK living costs outside London are high - in London are prohibitive.

Switzerland does take Oz ATCs into ops support roles. To work operational at Zurich you need GOOD German. To work at Geneve you need EXCELLENT French. there are a few summer only tower jobs - you'd be bored sh*tless in a week.

In short - if you want to leave Oz and work as a controller, and you want to put a few dollars in your pocket - go the Muddle East options. If you really want the lifestyle change, to experience life in Ireland, or Germany, be prepared to come home a little poorer in cash [but richer in memories!!!].

Traffic,

Unless you know people's background, where they have been and where they have family then you are better keeping your opinions to yourself.

I have no pretensions that DFS are going to be better to work for than ASA but if you are too afraid to take a chance and enjoy life, then that’s your problem not mine.

Thanks for the advice but if you think that I'm naive enough to make a decision like this based on a whim then well it shows maybe you shouldn't make assumptions based on an anonymous forum.

BTW, I work to live and to me living is experiencing new things not staying in one place because it is secure!

and to all others thinking of the move o/s. You are never gonna score big time cash as an ATC, maybe in Dubai but that is under increasing pressure from a piss poor exchange rate.

There are better employers than AsA, I am working for one at the moment, not perfect but better.

In terms of cash here in the UAE I am slightly better off than home but if the predictions of the Au$ hitting US$1.20 come true I will be worse off. Even then I will have to weigh up the lifestyle versus cash carefully.

As I have said before go to the intended destination first before signing the dotted line, it made my move over here so easy.

The best thing about Aussies packing up shop and moving O/S is that it sends a message to those morons in the Alan Wood Bldg (if thats where they still are?)

In response to Tfc Tfc I loved my out of hours life in Oz but the work at AsA was having a detrimental effect on my health, my family and my happiness.

Taking things personally wont get you very far - the only comment I made about you was your degree of apparent naivety.

I apologise if you misunderstood the point of my post.

I wholeheartedly agree with experiencing new things and seeing the world - believe me Australia is an Island.

What I was trying to convey (in my usual cement covered way) was that dont think that work will be a whole lot better somewhere else - I am sure there has to be somewhere better than where we aren't we all looking to find it?

I would encourage you to find what you are looking for - but be sure you know what it is that you are seeking before you leave to look for it. One could also argue that if you did leave for a few years and then come back AsA would be getting a better and more worldrounded product with a fresh way of looking at things....

Best of Irish to you....

A mate e-mailed a bit from "The Examiner" the issue with YMLT tower has been resolved and that the tower has only been shut for five hours since December. A pesky ATC bloke went sick, they must have a different time zone in Launceston!

One of the inbred local politicians is onto it Senator Barnett, has spoken to the airport operator and they has assured him that they have the situation under control and it will be fixed.

So is "cobber" coming back?

So was "cobber" off on sick leave from getting a nasty disease by being screwed by management?

Actually it isn't just like in OZ...at least the IAA are actually trying to sort the problem out, unlike AsA....

Ansa management is just waiting for BIG TONY, (BIG ANTHONY doesn't sound as impressive) to give them all the chop.

The National Party aligned executive, management and board all know that it doesn't matter what they do now, they are all about to be pushed along the plank to oblivion. Lots of insipid middle managers will also go when the new broom runs through the newly refurbished AWB.

BIG TONY, please hurry up and install your own cronies. Even if they know nothing about ATC management, they can't be any worse than the existing lot.

Off the press - BJ is off to Business Development effective immediately. JH must have found that whip and given it a crack. I wonder who is next?

?Game Show Host Next??

Gee, what did BJ do that was worse that what the Game Show Host introduced as the worst failure in town...i.e. SDE...

If I was Pete C I would be looking for something else....

I hear he has a sore neck always looking up wondering whether there is an anvil falling...

Strangely Business Development seemed right up his alley..i.e. all BS and no substance....and BJ beat him to it?? Ha Ha Ha ha ha...

BJ is a good fella who will be missed in ATC. Having to deal with us on a day to day basis is more than anyone should have to endure. There are many of us who're sorry he's going.
