qantas announces futher restructuring

Qantas Airways Ltd says further restructuring will be necessary as world oil prices continue to rise.

Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon said the price of oil would stay very high for a very long time, and the company no longer thought oil prices would stay at $US60 a barrel.

"We do not believe oil prices will recede in any major way in the next two to three years," Mr Dixon said.

"We believe it (the oil price) will be higher than that ($US60) and the business will have to be run ... at a much higher oil price, which will mean further and quite substantial restructuring of Qantas."

He said the company was making changes, which would be announced in the next two to three months.

Qantas said it would scrap the Australian Airlines brand in favour of building the international services of low cost domestic carrier Jetstar, which is gearing up to fly international routes later this year.

"Part of that major restructuring is the starting of Jetstar as an international operation," Mr Dixon said.
how long more do we have to put up with this constant pressure to change what we do and do well i might add
i hope their will be more consulation than the heavy maintenance restructure.

Maybe Dixon could lead by example and show he is serious about containing costs by taking a pay cut. I think I might be dreaming though.

Blame fuel prices...

Opportunistic scapegoating in my view. Every airline needs fuel. By all accounts QF hedges fiarly well by world standards and hence stands to do better on fuel costs than many companies who don't,or didn't, hedge (eg VB). I fail to understand the connection when the mantra 'fuel's up; everything else must come down' turns into a situation where price rises become a cost which employees must offset.

Can anyone help me?

I would think as the cost of fuel skyrockets, the differentiation between a full service airline and an LCC becomes less defined. This may result in a decrease in the number of passengers and a shift back to quality over quantity. I wonder at what cost per barrell that this possibility becomes apparent. I get the feeling that the executive love affair with the mean and lean Jetstar over the sure and steady Qantas may end sooner rather than later.

The next news story is their intensions with the pie shops. The announcment was suppose to be middle of April now it's the end of April. The two options are sell or restructure but the secrecy provisions in place are holding the outcome watertight at this point. The latest rumor floated is that QF freight and DHL are talking. As I said it's only a rumor.

Darth is certainly using the adage of attack is the best form of defence. To offset any criticism of job losses at AO he announces how perilous the company’s position is due to the cost of fuel and that he will need to re-structure.

Instead of asking about AO ,the media is now asking about his new re-structuring plans..

As qf1 said ,instead of job sackings ,how about raising ticket prices or at the very least taking a pay cut yourself.

The next thing he will do is to put a weight tax on pax over the set average

Why would anyone in their right mind wish to work for an airline bent on destabilising their own employees - keeping them constantly off balance with threats of further restructuring? This is madness! There are only two good ways to restructure:

You either restructure "quick and dirty", redundancies, etc. over in one day, promise your staff that this is the last change you are making for many years, so that they can get on with the business of serving your customers.

Or you do it "slow and clean", announce that changes will be made according to a schedule, maximise consultation and negotiation, set up a generous voluntary redundancy scheme with clearcut rules and wave people tearfully but fondly goodbye.

The third alternative - "slow and dirty", constant threats about the need to change, constant threats about outsourcing, job cuts and so on. decisions made in secret with zero consulatation, simply maximises the pain and guarantess that your customers aren't going to get a good deal because the staff are too busy worrying about their own futures.

It's the Board and senior management who should be living with insecurity, not the poor CC, engineers and pilots.

Part of the reason senior management gets paid so much is that you think about the business 24/7 and lose sleep sometimes over how you are going to achieve your goals. It's not a good idea if your employees are losing sleep over their employment - especially pilots.

GD started his reign with a lot of luck. The Ansett collapse, bargain priced aircraft after 9/11 all ready to go. Employees on side willing to help out at EBA time, feeling good about crappy little bonus's

Now he's got everybody off side. No co operation from the employees, job cuts, pitting one group against subsidised other groups, etc. And now the luck runs out. Fuel prices are through the roof and are going to stay there. He better get used to it. Lets see how his luck holds out now.

But he has the ultimate get-out-of- jail card. Take that huge payout and p*ss off and leave the problem to somebody else.

Politicians do it when in power, why not GD.

Sunfish,

Thats a good question, one I ask myself often.

What I wonder is why a paying customer would want to board an aircraft that is maintained by angry engineers, crewed by hostile hosties and worst, flown by pilots who feel totally undermined professionally and who really are wondering where there future is?

Ask yourself that when your down the back next.
There are some angry pilots there and two stuck in a box together, well, there not talking about their rosy futures on the 787 are they?

Dixon is living off the goodwill of QF staff which he has just about used up. I just hope my redundancy is approved and I will no longer have to put up with this garbage after 20 years service.

In 5 years, J* pilots with bugger all experience will be flying QF 787's under a wet lease agreement. The few LAMES that are left will have long since given up caring and cabin crew will be comprised of Asian speaking nationals and pommie backpackers. BUT THERE WILL BE CHEAP AIRFARES!!

It will be a catastrophe waiting to happen.

It's every man for themselves and time to head for the exit before you are robbed of your entitlements by QF or the IR laws.

Whilst we are all pretty down....
That basta*d and his co-horts will never effect the desire of the flight crew to get our passengers there safely..I think I speak for all of the pilot group. Close the flight deckdoor and QCC doesn't matter. Furthermore the lively debates keep most of us awake back of the clock!!

It may be interesting to see in the coming months how well they manage as operating costs start increasing....

Insider,

Sadly they know this all too well. However, that said, I must admit my desire to open the manuals, study and in general give a sh*t is waining.
It's time to find a new pond perhaps, life is too short to live like this.

QF Malice

Everything that is done has an essence of malice attached to it.
One of the CC team managers takes great delight in terminating people.
It has become a very nasty malicious company to work for.
Why they bother spending money on engagement surveys is beyond me.
Blind freddy could see that everyone is upset and disengaged

Abso-bluddy-lutely spot on QFinsider, the safety won't change as we all ( I think ) want to get to the other end in 1 piece, never mind the pax, if I get there safely then they do by default.
Some morons, sorry I mean management, seem to think they can treat us like dirt and that because we are " professionals " we will do our upmost to operate the A/C as efficiently as possible.............................well here's a news flash idiots.................WRONG!

" waddya reckon we climb and save some fuel ? "
" Na, can't be stuffed " ( there goes your savings Geoffery )

" should we right this defect up ( not safety related )now or wait 'till we get back to a maintenance base ? "
" I'll call operations and tell them the A/C is grounded, to find rooms for 150 people, and to fly an engineer and parts up "

" running a little late, wot cost index you want "
" whatever gets us home and away from this of a place in the shortest possible time "

" hey guys, got an intermittent fault, we can't find it and it has'nt done it today, you happy to take it and report further ? "
" we'll be in the crew room when you fix it, give us a call "

Do I need to go on ??

Had a passenger onboard who claimed to be an "advisor" to CEO's.

I assumed she was some sort of "stylist" who works to soften the reptilian [eat their own young] demeanor that these types typically have.

Anyway, she claimed to have worked extensively with both dick'son and Strong.

She had spent much time with darth and claimed that he couldn't care less about Qantas.

Jetstar was his baby and that was ALL he cared about.

No revelation to us at the rat I suppose...........

Here you go,
An Army of One
I am an Army of One (or 2, or 300, …)
I am an Army of One – A Captain in the Continental Airlines army.
For years I was a loyal soldier in Gordon’s army. Now I fight my own war.
I used to feel valued and respected. Now I know I am mere fodder.
They (CAL) used to exhibit labor leadership. Now they exploit legal loopholes.
They used to enjoy my maximum. Now they will suffer my minimum.
I am an army of One.
I used to save CAL a thousand pounds of fuel per leg; finding the best FL, getting direct routing, throttling back when on-time was made, skimping during ground ops, adjusting for winds, being smart and giving the company every effort I could conjure. Now, it’s “burn baby, burn”.
I used to call maintenance while airborne, so the part would be ready at the gate.
Now, they find the write-up when they look in the book.
I used to try to fix problems in the system, now I sit back and watch as the miscues pile up.
I used to fly sick. Now I use my sick days, on short notice, on the worst day of the month.
I am an army of One.
I used to start the APU at the last possible moment. Now my customers enjoy extreme comfort.
I used to let the price of fuel at out-stations affect my fuel orders. I still do.
I used to cover mistakes by operations. Now I watch them unfold.
I used to hustle to ensure an on-time arrival, to make us the best. Now I do it for the rampers and agents who need the bonus money…. But this too may change.
I used to call dispatch for rerouting, to head off ground delays for bad weather.
Now I collect overs, number 35 in line for takeoff.
I am on a new mission – top demonstrate that misguided leadership of indifference and disrespect has a cost. It’s about character, not contracts. It’s about leading by taking care of your people instead of leadership by bean counters (an oxymoron). With acts of omission, not commission, I am a one-man wrecking crew – an army of One. My mission used to be to make CAL rich.
Now it’s to make CAL pay.
When they furlough more pilots than the rest, pilots that cost them 60 cents on the dollar – I will make them pay.
When they under-staff bases and overwork reserves to keep pilots downgraded, down flowed, or downtrodden – I will make them pay.
When over-booked customers are denied boarding system wide, while jets are parked in the desert – I will make them pay.
When they force pilots, who have waited 12 years to become captains, to be FOs again – I will make them pay.
When they ask CAL pilots to show leadership at Express, and then deny them longevity – I will make them pay.
When they recall F/As for summer, just to furlough them again in the fall like migrant workers – I will make them pay.
When they constantly violate the letter and spirit of our contract – a contract that’s a bargain by any measure, and force us to fight lengthy grievances – I will make them pay.
My negotiating committee speaks for me, but I act on my own. I am a walking nightmare to the bean counters that made me. Are you listening? This mercenary has a lot of years left with this company; how long can you afford to keep me bitter? I’m not looking for clauses in a contract, I’m looking for a culture of commitment and caring. When I see it, I’ll be a soldier for CAL again.
Until then, I am an Army of One… And I’m not alone!

wow, that just about sums up all of my thoughts in one. It seems mr Dixon has very, very short vision. At least he sees all the way to his retirement (only matter of months), and sees the bonuses he can get between now and then, leave someone else to do the mopping.
