Protests in Sydney today
ah, brings me back to the 1980'sin London and the Poll tax riots, well not really.
Pathethic stuff, Bunch of Greenie students who are protesting against Halliburton, [INSERT whatever here] are absolutely railroaded by mounted police, what an absolute joke, I think it says alot about your poli's when you have 30-40 protesters being coralled by 16/20 mounted and about 30-40 foot and associated police.
I understand the police have a job to do, but their application and deployment in this case stinks to high heaven.
Don't blow smoke here, it was disgracefully heavy handed and totally inflamed the situation.
It will be a shock if we ever get professional demonstrators who are organised here in Sydney, then the Police and the Government will be out of their depth, and thats a fact.
If they make a complete mess of such a small crowd, then how would they cope with 10 times the number.

1000 protesters at scene says Skynews at midday. On a more serious note these characters are the targets of removing compulsory student fees. A lot of the cannon fodder for the green protests are environmental studies students and remanents of the red ragger lefties that have grown disgruntled with their right leaning parliamentary wing. All funded from student union fees

SKY News lies, why is this a surprise ?

se. Sky news is also telling lies.
But I concede that 1000 is a more newsworthy number than 60.
We saw them before going to lunch at 12:30 at the corner of King and George, and it looked like a joke.
We came back from lunch and saw them at the little memorial park opposite Martin Place, being hemmed in by mounted and foot police, they were finally escorted away down the middle of george.
The Sky News "journos" were in amongst them, very brave to be in amongst a 1000 angry protestors, what a load of .

Army don't want no low life scum like that . The police should round them up and hand them to centrelink to take their dole bludging allowances away from them. Funny how they all can get time off from work to protest about.....what is it this time...do they even know?

I spoke to 4 girls who were carrying a banner today, two are studying law at sydney uni, the two others medicine.
so hardly centerlink material, which ever way you look at it.

I believe the police response would have been based on estimated numbers, so the protest didn't get the support they had hoped for and advised the police of, as is a requirement?

I just love the irony of a pom telling us we did a lousy job. More ironic (or was that "moronic") that he refers to the Poll Tax riots in the UK to proove his point.
For the record idiot - sorry, I mean 7gcbc - the poms wouldn't know how to handle a piss-up in a brewery, let alone a riot. The poll tax riots are a classic case in point - half of London got destroyed on a daily basis; and as we all know this was "rent a riot" and not legitimate protestors. Take any civil disobedience event in the UK and you'll see cops and protestors injured by the dozen; bulidings, cars, etc damaged beyond repair.
The SYD event was hardly a cause for protest; as was reported on the news no 2 protestors agreed on what they were protesting about. Therefore, the perceived risk was that this was another professionally managed attempt at creating anarchy for the sake of it through civil disobedience. Heavy handed is appropriate - less than one thousand people showed up - why should the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of other Aussies and tourists be threatened by this minority element? Perhaps if the poms adopted a "dont f*ck with us" approach then London would look less like a battleground and more like the brilliant city that it is.

You'd never employ one of them, but then again as previously mentioned this mob wouldnt work in an iron lung.
They complained about multinationals making billions and say its not fair.
Maybe they'd prefer massive losses, massive unemployment and more poverty.
Ths is from a guy that was wearing a "diesel" brand T shirt, brand name jeans and probably uses a Nokia mobile phone.
He probably frequents McDonalds and eats processed cereal as well.
And what about the cigerettes a percentage of them probably smoke??

I still think it looked pretty bad for both sides, can't say what the main protaganists were doing, they were not visible behind the ranks of police, which just made the whole thing look silly.
As far as controlling the situation peacefully, then I'm afraid that even with such overwhelming numbers, the police only did a fair job, regardless of the "rent-a-crowd" or "anarchist" elements, the police should really have just ignored them and snatched the one or two agitators, rather than hemming them all into the memorial park in Wynard Lane.
By all accounts it was a fairly inept demonstration, and thats the reference I was making, although I can't help wondering (yes barbarossa) if this is the reaction to a fairly pathethic demo, what methods would the police use if it was serious ?

Pilots Riot on Sydney streets.

Massive riots occurred yesterday around the Sydney Opera House forecourt and spread to the streets of the Sydney CBD.
Leading the riot was professional anarchist Qantas Second Officer Michael Hunt, whilst representing both Jetstar and Virgin Blue were Yitzak Goldberg and Jimmy Jones.
"How can a second officer hope to survive on the paltry sum of up to $140,000 a year?" screamed Hunt.
"We're being ripped off black and blue.
Qantas made over $1 billion in profit and look what pathetic figure they pay us.
Before you know it they'll be expecting us to actually perform take-offs as well as landings! It just isnt cricket"

Besides, its OK at the moment...my Mum and Dad can afford to keep me at home in the Double Bay Mansion so I can continue to work for Jetstar.
Jetstar is just great.They even gave me a 10% cash discount when I paid for my own Airbus endorsement. What a great crowd and besides, it's things like that which make Jetstar a true family airline!"

Agree with Beer Can D that the likes of Jetstar should be trying for higher wages rather than undercutting VB, or at least match their pay scale.
