Auckland on Pacific Blue's radar

Tues "New Zealand Herald"

Auckland on low-cost airline Pacific Blue's radar
01 February 2005

Low-cost carrier Pacific Blue looks ready to start flying out of Auckland but its boss, Tony Marks, will not confirm as much.

However, Mr Marks said news could be forthcoming shortly.

"We...recognise that Auckland is the major market to and from the Tasman and has to be on our radar," Mr Marks said.

"We'll make a statement about our 2005 aspirations about Auckland and one or two other places in the next couple of weeks."

He said the airline, owned by Australia's Virgin Blue, had examined a domestic service, but found the idea "proved a little bit challenging".

It was not immediately clear what destinations Pacific Blue would service.

But, Auckland's Island population was likely to make the Pacific a top contender.

Mr Marks' comments come as Virgin Blue's 45 per cent owner, Patrick Corp, mounts a bid to take full control of the carrier, 25 per cent owned by UK entrepreneur Richard Branson.

They also come a year after Pacific Blue made its inaugural New Zealand flight out of Christchurch.

Pacific Blue is also flying from Wellington to destinations in Australia and the Pacific and is making a profit, although Mr Marks would not disclose how much.

He would concede that Pacific's year had been "extraordinary".

"We are ahead of where we wanted to be. We knew we'd start with one aircraft and go to two, we weren't certain about the third and we got a third," he said.

Since Pacific's proposals for a new plane must be weighed against competing claims from other parts of the Australian network, successfully getting a third jet was welcome.

"The business just keeps growing and the organisational numbers remain the same - it is a tribute to the competence of the people running it that they've got the experience and knowledge to do that

Is it true all PB pilots have been asked to re-validate their OZ ATPL's ?

If so why would they need an OZ ATPL ?????????

Press Release: Pacific Blue

MEDIA RELEASE
Pacific Blue Takes On International Freight

Pacific Blue is celebrating one year of flying by announcing the launch of commercial cargo operations across its Trans Tasman and intra Pacific Island network.

The initiative has been welcomed by agents, forwarders, other airlines and suppliers and will provide a very competitive alternative to and from Australia, as well as several Pacific ports.

Pacific Blue and Virgin Blue now operate over 100 connecting services a week between New Zealand, Australia, Fiji^ and Vanuatu^, with Virgin Blue operating approximately 300 flights per day within Australia.

Consignments lodged up to midnight at New Zealand Cargo Terminal Operators (CTO) will be delivered to all major ports in Australia the following morning, meaning delivery almost anywhere in Australia within 24 hours.

The express clearance of this freight operation is supported through Patrick’s Air Services in Australia and Cargo port in New Zealand and with the local CTO in the Pacific Islands.

Pacific Blue Freight** General Manager, Max Irvine Brown, said, “The goal for Pacific Blue is to work together with the CTO's to make sure agents have their freight with speed as we recognise the importance of those needs within the industry”..

“We are setting new standards in freight customer service that align with the company strategy of putting the customer first and foremost and we believe that people who want a good deal on freight will vote with their wallet, that’s what competition is all about,” he finished.

Pacific Blue Freight has an extremely competitive rate schedule and a user friendly booking system. For freight sales enquiries please email: [email protected] or call 0800 723 734 (toll free) if calling from New Zealand or +64 3 357 48 78 if calling from Australia.

Someone correct me if I am wrong...I thought all flights out of Oz by PacBlue were done by PACIFIC BLUE AIRLINES (AUST) PTY LTD, or PACIFIC BLUE AIRLINES PTY LTD, or BLUE INTERNATIONAL PTY LTD whatever they want to be called today....

And the PACIFIC BLUE AIRLINES (N.Z.) is just subcontracted for the services of aircraft and crew ?

Is this true blue ?

Got a hunch the only reason why PB would be operating out of Auckland is because of the Polynesian tie up. Aparently the Virgins have been in Auckland demanding this that and the other in concessions while everybody else has to compete on a level playing field. Go figure??

I doubt with the loads they are carrying out of CHC and WLG they are making a "profit". But hey, nothing like good ole Virgin brainwashing and PR spin.

Wait and see what happens with AirNZ and QF (Jetconnect) now. There may be some interesting times ahead.
