Surely some of the posts to this thread are a windup. Safety aside, why should a low cost airline demand different dress standards to a low cost bus. While it seems a few of the "professionals" on this thread see themselves as something special (and they may well be), at the end of the day you are hauling bodies from one place to another.
If you REALLY think about it, does anyone who is not a "real" pilot think the typical pilot dress actually looks good?

As I said, it may have changed everywhere recently.
But it was how I said at the Airlines I am familiar with, from the 1960s until at least the 1990s.
I always thought it was stupid, but that is how it was.

I agree that the VB uniform lacks the professional look but I disagree with the point that they look like Australian Customs.
That look is reserved for Australian Airlines!!

The question begs as to why VB management would have their pilots wear such an unprofessional uniform where everyone looks the same ? I have my suspicions as to why.
Any one have a theory ? Am curious to hear it.

Why is the Virgin uniform unprofessional? Is it because they don't wear ties? Leather jackets?
Where does it say to be professional you must wear a blue jacket and trou with a tie, hat etc?
The professional pilots of old wore full length leather trenchcoats, silk scarves and biggles helmets, does that then make the the blue suit and gold rings boys look unprofessional in comparison?
Methinks there's more than a bit of wank involved in those slagging off a uniform.
Professionalism is how you do the job, not what you look like doing it.

The actual professional standards of VB pilots is not in question here.
It is how they are dressed and the perception that others have of them because of their dress standard that is in question.
Good point re the biggles uniforms but open cockpits and paddocks of yesteryear hardly compare to a modern pressurised flight deck and flashy terminals where we are seen by the public. The majority of the worlds airlines do supply their pilots with a smart looking uniform to uphold a professional image.
How would you feel if you went to a nuero surgeon seeking life saving surgery and everybody from the cleaners to the surgeons were wearing the same sloppy casual jeans and tea shirt. Personally I would be looking for another surgeon who takes pride in his appearance as hopefully the same pride would be present whilst operating.
Maybe I am old fashioned but I don't see the wearing of a smart uniform as a burden but more as a reward for the years of hard work to achieve ones qualifications.

I would have said that our boys look very "smart" in there very nice uniforms and whats more do you think the pax even notice what the drivers are wearing. All they are interested in is getting from A to B for the cheapest amount and hopefully around the time that is printed on the itinerary.

What they wear is smart and understated. If the best we can discuss on these forums is what VB pilots wear then heaven help us.
