Tiger Airways starts operation

From: Commercial Aviation Today, September 15, 2004

Singapore's newest low-fare carrier, Tiger Airways, has launched operations with initial flights from Singapore's Changi Airport to Bangkok. The launch comes amid heavy new competition from low-fare carriers in Southeast Asia.

In August Tiger Airways announced its first new routes. In addition to three daily flights to Bangkok, the airline is aiming for 10 destinations in ifs first year and 15 in its second. The airline's second and third communities will be the Thai holiday destinations of Phuket and Hatyai.

Tiger Airways joins the AirAsia franchise, ValuAir, Thai Airways' Nok Air, Orient Thai's One-Two-Go and coming Qantas-backed Jetstar Asia in the increasingly crowded southeast Asia low-fare market.

Tiger Airways is backed by Singapore Airlines, its parent Temasek, the investment firm founded by former America West chief Bill Franke and the investment group of Ryanair founder, the Ryan family.
