Hawaiian Airlines announce Sydney-Hawaii to start in May
HAWAIIAN AIRLINES ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR NONSTOP FLIGHTS FROM SYDNEY TO HAWAII
SYDNEY, January 16, 2004 - Hawaiian Airlines, the largest carrier in Hawaii, the 12th largest in the United States, and rated one of America’s best airlines, announced today it has applied for government approvals to provide non-stop flights from Sydney to Honolulu, commencing on Tuesday, May 18.
Hawaiian’s flight schedules are designed with Australian travellers in mind, offering convenient departure and arrival times. The airline plans to offer four weekly flights departing Sydney at 9.30pm every Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and arriving in Honolulu at 10.55am local time, the same day.
Announcing the airline’s plans today, Hawaiian Airlines President and Chief Operating Officer Mark Dunkerley said the new services would favour both short breaks and longer stays in the Hawaiian Islands, and enable one-stop travel from Australia to six destinations on the U.S. west coast.
“Hawaii has long been a favourite destination for Australian holidaymakers – but it has also been under-served in recent years as major carriers have introduced new long range aircraft, largely eliminating the need to stop over in Hawaii,” said Mr Dunkerley. “As we increase our international operations with new long-range aircraft, Australia is a natural and very important addition to our trans Pacific network.”
Hawaiian will operate from Sydney with wide-bodied Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, seating 252 passengers in a two class cabin – 18 in First Class and 234 in Economy, where a 2 x 3 x 2 seat layout ensures that passengers have an 86% chance of a window or aisle seat.
“Our evening departures from Sydney will enable travellers to complete a full day at work or at home, then sleep on the overnight journey and be relaxing on the beach in Hawaii by early afternoon,” said Mr Dunkerley.
“The evening departure time also enables travellers from interstate and country locations to fly or drive to Sydney to join the Hawaiian Airlines flights, which are also easily accessible for passengers arriving on services from New Zealand. And with the Australian winter approaching, more intense competition in the travel market, and the Australian dollar continuing to strengthen against the U.S. currency, there has never been a better time to visit Hawaii.”
The new flights by Hawaiian Airlines are timed to commence ahead of the July peak season for holiday travel from Australia to Hawaii. They will also provide plenty of capacity for conference and incentive groups to visit the 50th U.S. state, which is well-served by major hotels and conference facilities and offers a vast range of attractions and activities for delegates.
In addition to the popular attractions in and around Honolulu, including the world-famous Waikiki Beach, the new flights from Sydney will connect conveniently with Boeing 717 flights from Honolulu to six other destinations in the Hawaiian Islands.
Travellers also can connect quickly with Hawaiian’s onward flights from Honolulu to six U.S. mainland destinations – the Californian gateways of San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento and Los Angeles, the Pacific Northwest cities of Seattle and Portland.
As well as providing fresh flight options for Australian travellers, the new flights by Hawaiian Airlines will also provide much-needed extra capacity between Australia and the U.S. Australian tourism organisations recently have expressed concern that a shortage of seats from America is impeding the development of tourism to Australia.
“We are based in Hawaii – but with our flights from the U.S. mainland, we can also offer one-stop service to Sydney, via Honolulu, providing additional capacity and a new way for American leisure and business travellers to fly to Australia,” said Mr Dunkerley.
The Managing Director of the Australian Tourist Commission, Ken Boundy, welcomed Hawaiian’s announcement.
"The US is a major tourist market for Australia, delivering around 450,000 visitors each year and some of the highest spending travellers of any country,” said Mr Boundy. "The introduction of the new services will open up Honolulu as a new gateway for U.S. travellers from the Pacific Northwest cities of Seattle and Portland, to complement Los Angeles as a gateway to Australia and provide more options for travellers looking to choose Australia as the destination for their next vacation."
New South Wales Tourism Minister Ms Sandra Nori also welcomed the economic benefits which Hawaiian Airlines services would deliver to the State. “Sydney is the major gateway for international tourists to Australia and it is important that travellers to this country have a greater choice of carriers and hubs,” said Ms Nori. “We can expect these services to bring many more tourists out to see all Australia has to offer. This is great news because it provides more opportunities for people to visit our vibrant city and regions.”
Hawaiian’s new services to Australia are scheduled to leave Honolulu at 1.30pm every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, arriving in Sydney at 7.30pm the following day. For those already in Honolulu, the early afternoon departure enables a leisurely start to the final day in Hawaii, while travellers on outer islands will have the whole morning to return for their flight to Australia.

Fan-bloody-tastic if you ask me!
The services AC and QF offer are ridiculous in terms of timings, means you have to book an extra night's accomodation on the day of arrival and of departure just to accommodate the airlines' ludicrous schedules. The Hawaiian Airlines mentality makes a lot more sense.
Fingers crossed they will get their approval and give QF and AC a run for their money.

I hope they get approval.
QF is OK but I really hate arr. in LAX - one of the worst airports in the USA (world?).
The stop in HI is worth avoiding LAX.
