SALE leases three aircraft to Qantas subsidiary Jetstar

Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise (SALE), a unit of Singapore Airlines (SIA), is leasing three new Airbus A320 aircraft to Qantas Airways' low-cost carrier Jetstar.

Asia’s largest aircraft lessor said it had also had talks with Tiger Airways, a budget carrier set up by SIA, on the possibility of leasing planes to it.

SALE, which currently has 51 aircraft in service with 28 airlines worldwide, said three A320s would be delivered to Jetstar in June and July, but did not state the length of the lease.

According to SALE corporation communications executive Janice Wong, lease rates for newer aircraft such as the A320s have firmed over the last quarter although they are still not back to levels before the Sept 11, 2001, terror attacks on the United States.

Market lease rates for a new A320 aircraft range from US$270,000 to US$300,000 a month, industry sources say. Aircraft leasing companies own about a quarter of the world’s commercial jets and play a key role when plane makers look for buyers of new models. – Reuters

Qantas Airways makes full use of new Airbus deliveries

Qantas Airways Ltd has incorporated a number of new Airbus A330 aircraft into its flight schedule, saying the move will boost capacity by as much as 130 per cent on some routes.


Australia's flagship carrier has recently taken delivery of six A330s, which means smaller Boeing 737s are now to be used elsewhere.

Executive General Manager Qantas Airlines John Borghetti said the A330 would enable Qantas to increase capacity on some routes by as much as 130 per cent over the same period in 2003.

The move follows the company's announcement on Wednesday that its low cost carrier Jetstar would lease three new Airbus A320 planes from Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise (SALE).

The planes, currently in production and due for delivery in June and July, will be configured to Jetstar's specification to accommodate 177 passengers in a single-class layout.

Qantas on Thursday also announced it would add two new domestic routes from April this year, with non-stop services to commence between Sydney and Broome, and Perth and Cairns.

Borghetti said the new routes would provide a real boost for domestic tourism and provide more direct access to some of Australia's most popular holiday destinations.

"Qantas will commence non-stop, twice weekly, two class Boeing 737-800 services between Perth and Cairns from April," Borghetti said.

"This will add more than 330 seats each week to the airline's already significant operations to and from Cairns."

He said Qantas would begin operating a daily non-stop Melbourne-Cairns return service using an A330 instead of the current Boeing 737 from April.

"This will increase non-stop capacity by 130 per cent - or around 2,600 seats each week," he said.

A330s will also operate one of two daily return Brisbane-Perth services, adding 45 per cent capacity on the peak period flight.

"The extra 2,100 seats a week this will add to the market include an additional 360 Business Class seats," Borghetti said.

"By April we will be operating A330 flights to Perth from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne."

Borghetti said the wide-bodied A330 aircraft being used on the longer-haul domestic routes offered a more spacious cabin, offering 38 business class and between 265 and 305 economy class seats.

The relocation of its Boeing 737s would mean an increase in Brisbane-Darwin capacity, by adding eight services a week.

After the announcement late last year, Qantas' daily flights linking Canberra and Perth will commence on February 4.
