ATC Comm Question
Hello all, I was rolling out on the runway in Doha and about to exit with plenty of runway ahead and the controller said
"confirm speed under control" what does this mean? thank you. |
No idea!! Must be a "local" thing.
Interesting, I can't answer the question directly I'm afraid but it may be that it's similar to asking the questions:
"Report/confirm at taxi speed" or "Confirm you will exit via ##". Occasionally colleagues may ask this to ascertain which exit you may take, for planning purposes, or even to enter a vehicle at the far end of the runway. |
I've heard it used by French pilots at both Farnborough and Fairoaks to indicate they can take the next available turnoff.
I have been asked by RAF ATC at Boscombe Tower during a landing roll-out to 'report when under control'. Bit of an insult, if you ask me...
..who in their right mind would ever answer 'no'?
Seems bad technique to me. I was always taught not to communicate with aircraft as they took off or landed. Why would a tower controller want to know?
I totally agree; as I said I've only heard from pilots to ATC not from ATC.
It's pointless junk RTF.
Achieves nothing. Who thinks of this rubbish... |
"speed (under) control" is used by mil jet planes, e.g. at airports with an arresting cable system installed. How did the Doha ATCO come up with it? What were you flying?
As I understand 'under speed control' means you are confident you are definitely going to stop before the end of the runway regardless of what happens. There may have been a ring road in the overshoot with traffic lights the controller wanted to change back to green. Although the most common reason someone would ask this in my experience is to change barrier settings at military airfields equipped with a barrier as a stopping aid.
