There was no approach made by anyone to PPRuNe to pull the thread.

However, the thread was begining to name names and cast aspersions about individuals and their attributes. As the names are not in the public domain (at least that PPRuNe could find) and the accusations being made are potentially libelous, the thread was removed (but still available to admins and moderators) to protect the site from any potential legal actions.

Freedom of speech comes with responsibility. If and when the appointment is made public, a thread can be started about the appointment. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it will be open house on character assassination of the individual, unless any points being made are both relevant and factual.
