Who or what is LOMAN?

Us SHWs at LHR are wondering who or what LOMAN (near N3) is named after.
Answers on a postcard please....

All the 27L holding points are Scottish lochs.
(09R A/c companies, 09L animals, 27R spacey-type stuff)

Remember the good old days... Block 87, 85, 19, 16, 79, 102, etc?

Minesthechevy 18th May 2010 07:42

HD, ah, the good ol' days...

There was a certain logic to the number system, but I could never work out how Blk101 and Blk100 came to be at opposite diagonals on the airfield.

ISTR that the name Blk53 had two applications, one being of the walking variety.

HEATHROW DIRECTOR 18th May 2010 09:15

Dunno about Bl 53, M.... I do know that RD and others determined scientifically (using pi) that the "average" block was 111... How on earth can you produce such earth-shattering information when the holds are given daft names?

sabenaboy 18th May 2010 09:34

I thought I saw a pussy cat!

There sure is some logic in this approach:

GPS 16 approach into Pease International Airport in Portsmouth, New Hampshire

ITAWT-ITAWA-PUDYE-TTATT :ok:

(info stolen from this post)

Best regards,

IIRC on the North Sea simulation several years ago BETTY BITES BIGGA BOLOX didn't make it into the revised airspace - and i never got to meet Betty:sad:

Perhaps its harps back to the old days of the 'Low Man' where sectors were split vertically?

HEATHROW DIRECTOR 18th May 2010 18:54

<<Just to correct the second post, I believe the 27R holding points are mythological gods>>

You mean they're named after ATCOs?

sickBocks 18th May 2010 22:45

Re 27R - I suppose that's true now ROKIT doesn't exist any more.

Nubboy 19th May 2010 08:04

Just tried looking on the map for loch nevis:ok:

Max Angle 19th May 2010 08:28

I am not sure any of them should exist, my understanding is that 5 letter identifiers are reserved for airborne use only and that the LHR holding point designators are not ICAO compliant. It is certainly the only place I have ever seen them used as holding points and it does seem to cause confusion on read backs amongst crews who are not regulars and have not got used to LHR's little quirk.

<<Just tried looking on the map for loch nevis>>

Look slightly north of 27R....:-)))

Dan Dare 19th May 2010 10:15

LHR devil worshipers?

LOKKI and SATUN both names for malevolant underworld gods. Both to be found in Hell.

Oh, now I get it - you've been telling all those pilots to go to hell, but politely and professionally. Very clever!

Very wry! Brilliant.
