Clear2land78, I think Red Dragon was being critical with the situation, not with you. Don't worry, nobody hates you
I second that. It's the situation and the rules restricting controller positions in America to US citizens that I don't like. Nothing against you Clear2land78 at all.

Working in Canada

Clear2land78, you don't want to come up to Canada right now. Nav Canada has invested HEAVILY in simulator software which uses "voice activation". By that I mean it uses very little interaction with a real person.

They are in the process of "letting go" all the staff which run the simulators. But the main problem is that the software doesn't run.
They have had to shut down almost all of the courses. However, the current courses are continuing with people acting the parts of pilots, but once they are completed they will shut down training or almost until they figure out what they are going to do with the "new voice activated simulator" that doesn't work.

What nav canada doesn't get is there are still pilots flying aircraft and until the they get rid of pilots, having simulation software that does NOT represent the real world will actually extend the amount of time it takes someone to check out.

Please do not ask me where I work, as I could get fired for telling all. Another great reason to work for nav canada.

Nav Canada and Voice simulation

ATC roger ..thank you for your input .. we have started using tower sims here .. I do not like it either as it does not reflect real world. I promise not to ask where you work:)

Are you still interested in Australia?

HEATHROW DIRECTOR 22nd May 2010 13:54

Clear2Land... Best of luck, my friend. I would strongly advise you to think about "cost of living" in your plans. There are few places on earth which are as cheap to live as the US, although Australia came pretty close last time I was there about 3 years ago. The UK, and probably much of Europe, is akin to living in hell!! I doubt if there's any ATC facility out side the US which would provide as much job satisfaction... but a few places we've been in the Pacific where the guy works a couple of hours then goes fishing for the rest of the day weren't bad!!

Consider your international training and experience and if you decide to venture into the private sector, you will always go in with two buckets. The money and BS bucket. Which ever fills first is sign to depart the pattern.....

I do not know why issues are what they are. I do not control them. :( I hope you don't count that against me. LOL.

Red Dragon,

You can go and work in the USA if you want to. Like almost all other countries if you have a skill that can not be found within its own population or if an employer has tried to recruit someone but has had no success, they can then hire a foreigner and apply for a work visa.

If you train to be a nurse I expect you will be able to find a job in the US. If there are enough controllers in the US why should they hire foreign ones? There are not enough in Aus so they hire foreign ones. Simple really or are they sour grapes?

Navcant 5th January 2013 05:17

I think security is only a part of it. Americans being Americans, if word got out that the FAA was hiring "foreigners" the general population would be furious.

You must be a US citizen to be hired in the USA. A green card is not enough.

LoserGill 5th January 2013 18:40

Also, in the USA don't bother applying if you are over 31.

ZOOKER 5th January 2013 19:48

But most of the USAs' population are, technically, 'foreigners'.
