CPDLC
Whenever I operate out of LHR and am transsitting Maastricht and then into Rhine (and the reverse route of course) I log on to EDYY and receive a CPDLC service. On leaving Mastricht into Rhine my little DCDU informs me that EDUU is the next unit, and flying into UK that EGTT is the next active unit. No CPDLC serevice is received and I am just curious as to when and if these units will ever be providing a CPDLC service??

The reason is that CPDLC is still in the test and development stage ( albeit a very advanced stage ) and Maastricht is a test centre for CPDLC.
There was some talk that the Brits/Irish were going to use it to pass on oceanic clearances but I don't know how true that is. As with everything these days it all comes down to money and how many operators are willing to fit the system and there are still a couple of isssues with it ;) You might be able to find more information here :- EUROCONTROL - CPDLC |
Most ANSP's need new kit to move into CPDLC, Australia, Maastrict also Shanwick (Eastern Atlantic); I'm sure there are others out there too.
There is a possibility of COOPANS (nations) using CPDLC in late 2010 (if it remains on time); although with projects of this nature late is always a sure bet....:} |

Not heard anything re. EGTT, EGPX or EISN getting around to using it. EGGX uses it, but mostly for the issue of altitude and speed revisions within the EGGX OCA. Oceanic Clearances for Westbounds about to enter the EGGX OCA can be issued via an ACARS-based system called ORCA, however this is distinct from CPDLC.

CPDLC comes under an SES implementing rule (Euro law) so most ANSP's will introduce it in early 2013, EGTT included.

i´ve been using cpdlc whenever i fly through edyy, and i am enjoying the new tool. however, i am lacking the understanding of many components involved and therefore would appreciate your help. cpdlc: air - ground data communication by use of vdl mode2. so far atc communicates the old fashion way, vhf or hf and they own the radios and antennas for it. now how about vdl mode2? who provides this vdl mode 2. who owns the equipment??arinc, sita or atc itself?? how is cpdlc data communication different from acars, which also transmits data... same principle, different provider????? who is really ATN. just anybody involved in aviation communication. what seperates ATN from the rest. who would, could or does belong into this network in particular. pardon my lack of knowledge, but it`s all there in the cockpit, easy to use, but what happens to be behind all these features interests me. i have been also using the monitoring feature of cpdlc. so far many controllers responded different to it. cheers trot |
I believe that for EGTT and EGGX, the implementation of the paperless systems is a prerequisite for en-route CPDLC, so its introduction will follow on from those of iFACTS and EFD in Swanwick AC, Swanwick TC and Prestwick Centre ... (can't find a 'smile' for a yawn!)

Oz has been using CPDLC for years, must be getting on close to 10 by now.

Topdrop, wonder if you could enlighten me.
At EGGX we are limited to using CPDLC for speed/level reclearances, transfer of comms at FIR boundaries, (Next Next Data Authority / VHF), and a limited number of freetext messages. Position reports are only accepted via ADS and HF as CPDLC 'psn reps' are not (yet) able to be forwarded via AFTN to the next (receiving) OCC. The capability to tx routing data is available but prohibited due to issues concerning the ability of certain types of FMS to upload and update route data without reference to the crew. (A problem I believe first encountered by NY OCC). What if any differences exist with how you guys use it? |
