When should Going-Around be called?
Hi,
Any UK/LHR Air Traffic Controllers care to help on a tech question from a dumb pilot? Scenario; LHR 27L, approach discontinued by pilots due low vis./nil contact at decision altitude. When should the Going-Around call be made to ATC? a) As soon as possible after aircraft safely climbing away workload permitting. b) At initial level-off altitude c) Anytime, ATC will call if special instructions I know my answer is a) but prepared to be corrected. a) sounds good to me! As soon as you can safely tell us - we may have traffic information for you, or a departure to stop.

Agreed, Aviate-Navigate-Communicate is the mantra, especially during high workload events such as a GA, but a timely call helps everyone involved!

When it's safe to do so and never before....

As soon as you safely can. Chances are we will see it anyway before you have a chance to call but a lot of people need to know as soon as possible that a missed approach is happening. (Arrivals, Departures, Northolt, TC Approach, Special VFR) so that a plan can be made to sort it out.
