Hi all, I have a dilemma. I've been accepted for an assessment centre within the next few months, and I am very keen, excited and confident about having the necessary skills to become an ATC. It is also a job which I see myself enjoying and succeeding in.

However some things have happened in the last few weeks which have made me really consider taking a year off in order to travel and complete some other personal things which I would otherwise not have the chance to do, before beginning my career as an ATC.

I am very aware though that Air services state you can only apply twice. If I had a chat to recruitment, do you think it would be possible for me to delay either my assessment centre, or alternatively my academy starting date if successful, by up to a year? Or if this wasn't likely, do you think they would mind if I withdrew from the upcoming AC without it counting as a failed attempt, so that I still have 2 chances to apply next year?

Thanks for your help!

Jones

Travelling to the college

I'm just trying to work out whether I will need a car in Melbourne or not when I'm at the field academy. If I was to rent somewhere like Essendon is it possible to cycle in and are there shower facilities and lockers?

WhisprSYD 28th July 2013 00:42

There's showers both at the academy and attached to the gym at Melbourne centre so no problem there.

Would probably take you 45 mins to cycle from essendon, just be prepared to play chicken riding down operations road each day and you'll be fine.

Not to mention battling against a howling northerly :)

kookabat 28th July 2013 01:36

A (small) number of people cycle to work at Airservices, I'm occasionally one of them. The slog up Operations Rd into a howling northerly (or, worse, into a southerly when you're going home) can be a challenge, and those conditions happen a lot. Airports are usually built in the windiest places for some reason!!
Relying on only a bicycle to get to work? It's possible, but you need to be hardier than I. Melbourne winters aren't much fun. I pick and choose my days and drive when it looks unsuitable.

Hempy 28th July 2013 10:56

Not only that, you'll be starting at 7am..peak-hour on Ops road with Qantas and JH starting at the same time, and it's still dark at 6:45 (assuming 15 minutes for a shower, change, slog to the Academy and preparation :-) ). Get good lights!

(or car pool/bum a lift with a course mate)

Jones, contact recruiting and discuss your situation with them - all we're offering is opinion & hearsay. It's possible to defer courses although I have no idea for how long and I think the test results expire.

If they're the sort of things you'd come to regret later in life not doing, particularly if they involve family, then do them.

Hi All.
I have an Assessment day coming up soon. I was hoping to try and get a visit to Brisbane enroute centre before then. Just wondering if anyone has any contact details they can help me out with.
Thanks

Don't have a direct number... but you could try their service desk and get put through.

Anybody have any idea when the applications will open again to experienced international ATCOs? Strange that their not recruiting for experienced ATCOs if the place is (by all accounts) short of staff.

cbradio 5th August 2013 08:25

Strange they're recruiting experienced controllers at all when ASA are adamant they are not short of controllers. Doesn't seem to add up! ;)

Still get two chances?

I applied for an ATC position in December last year, and unfortunately failed the initial online test. I plan to reapply in December of this year. Can anyone advise if candidates still get 2 chances to apply?

le Pingouin 7th August 2013 13:38

The job page says two chances still.

thanks for the info

Online test

Hi all

I applied for this job abt a month ago and i got informed that within a week i will get an online test to complete.can anyone just give an overview of what this test be like?

thanks

SpankyRooster 19th August 2013 02:38

Garry82,

In addition to Watermelons post, each individual test had a practice test prior to it. If it hasn't changed since I did them, You could do the practice ones as many times as you liked.

Good luck,

Spanks

Turns out attention to detail isn't my strong suit. The above post clearly includes my point. Sorry everyone!

stevep64 19th August 2013 07:19

Somewhere in this thread there's a FAQ about the whole selection process. It's worth searching it out rather than trying to read through the whole thread looking for answers.

garry82 20th August 2013 14:25

thanks everyone for sharing information. I got my test on coming sat.best of luck to me

garry82 22nd August 2013 03:52
