Which throws up some doubts on the selection process, doesn't it?

Stage 1 - failure
Just heard today I failed Stage 1.
Really gutted, as I felt reasonably good when I came out of the tests. Especially as I sat Cranwell tests for RAF Controller and passed them. I know different criteria but aptitude is aptitude is it not?! Oh well, back to running pubs for another year! Not helped as I run pubs in Bournemouth including the one closest to the college!! Good luck to all those in any stages! To all those others that failed, here's to another years waiting! GavReal |
The trainee went on to the college and by the time the mistake was spotted, he had nearly finished his training. He was then allowed to complete his training (successfully) and has now recently been posted to a certain unit very far up north |
pretty sure that rumour is true, regardless of simfly's utterances to the contrary :E
also surprised at that situation lizplt... i wouldnt envy anyone doing spatial awareness tests AND the computer tests at stage 2... :ugh: good luck :ok: |
That was my thought too. A new level of creul!
But at least it would prove that I could handle high levels of stress ;) |

You may find using CAPITAL letters in the appropriate places might help.
Good luck.:ok: |
Hi,
Just a small question. My 1st stage tests are coming up soon (next Friday in Belfast) In average, how many questions on cubes are there, and for how long? Could someone answer me on the same questions for the diagramms tests and whatever tests there are? Thanks for helping. Chris |
Will someone please tell us what 'Cubes' have got to do with Air Traffic Control?
|
Now now, heretostay, or should that be HereToStay? :E:ok:
He/she also missed an apostrophe, misspelled "replies" and "advice" and used a comma where a semi-colon would have been more appropriate. Standards, dear boy, standards. :} |
Or should it be;- 'Here To Stay'?
|
Ha ha ha at Zooker.
I see the point there. Numbers I can see, direction blah blah blah, but those cubes messed with my head! Anyway, finally got a reply. Looks like they want an unsociable wierdo because I passed the personality test too. Whhooo hoo :-) |
I am sure you mean 'Spatial Awareness'.
Yes, I know what a 'cube test' looks like. However, controlling air traffic is probably very similar to driving on a busy motorway at high, (albeit, legal) speeds. i.e., the continuous solving of speed, time and distance problems in a rapidly changing, dynamic environment. I am not aware of the requirement to undertake a 'cube test' prior to the acquisition of a UK driving licence. P.S EzyChic, - Well Done! |
Oggy, you might find it worthwhile to have a look at the main NATS Recruitment Process thread in this forum.

aewaite,
Sadly, I have never played 'Pong' (with or without the vertical aspect), and i do believe that the individuals who developed these tests were not ATCOs :E. |
aewaite,
No worries, and I hope you get called for stage 3 :ok::ok:. I also hope you're enjoying MATS Pt 1, It's a classic :}! |
Could someone please reply to my earlier questions?
Thanks you all btw for the help I found on this thread. Chris |
Your question have been answered many times in this thread... 40 questions for both checking sections, 40 for the cubes and diagramming, 20 for the motivation paper.
|
I had 30 questions in the motivation paper. Each test, 20 mins long.

Diagramming and general questions
See the main NATS Interview Process thread for most details on the tests.
[Think the main thread should be made into a sticky.] Basically, the diagramming is checking your ability to not only follow an instruction, but rather a series of instructions, some of which may counter previous instructions you have given [Thus testing you can keep a picture of the entire thread of instructions]. Think of it this way. Your merrily watching an aircraft going due south. Another is on a reciprocal heading, coming straight towards it, at the same level. Your first thought is to climb [for examples sake] one aircraft. Mentally, this option becomes position 1 in your plan. However, looking at traffic further down the line, you realise you cannot climb either, so you cancel your previous instruction, and choose something else. Fine, but then a third aircraft appears that completely throws your plan out the window [it wasnt a good plan to start with:)]. You have to remember what you did do, why, and what you now need to do taking in the new information, which may cancel or alter your previous instructions. Ok - maybe not the best example, but hopefully it helps explain why the diagramming is there, and what type of thing may be being looked for. Good Luck! |
