right, you just have to read the question properly and organize it:
Car: does 75km in t minutes at a speed s Train: does the same 75km in t-12,5 minutes (as it stopped for 12,5mins) at a speed 1,5s (as it can go 50% faster than the car) as speed is distance/time, if you match the speeds: 1.5*75/t = 75/(t-12.5) <=> t = 37.5 mins which gives s = 75/37.5 = 2km/min = 120 km/h. hope it helps, although you wont really find questions of this type (so elaborate) during the tests. You should practice head ons etc. which are generaly easier |
Roitos: thank you very much, I really understand it now. You've really simplified it!

stage 3 dates
has anyone any idea about when will b dates 4 the stage 3? Im wating since May and hav no notice!
Hugs Xxx |
I'm in the same boat except I have been waiting since well before May! :P
And no, nobody has any idea. HR are ignoring us all! :D We're learning to get used to that one. We should all consider a club with ties, jackets, bad music and low membership fees? Phil P.S. Serious part of the post: I have given up ringing NATS. I feel they have enough messages from me. At the end of the day, when they are ready to give me a Stage 3 date they'll issue me one. Until that point I am running on a "chilled out" policy. I personally believe that is the best action at the moment. |
WTF have the speeds of stopping trains (or cars) got to do with ATC? PhiltheReaper is even travelling in a boat FFS.
Surely passengers fly on airliners to avoid this rubbish. |
Crazy Voyager.
"New way with a joint basic course"? Nothing new there. that is what most of us did 32 years ago. Have they finally realized? Stand-by for the imminent return of 3 to 1 oral examination boards. :ok: |
ZOOKER: again, I know the problem from your point of view, does not have any sense, but in regard to the maths test it is mandatory to know how to quickly and mentally calculate speed, time and distance problems. Not to mention, wether the question refers to planes, cars or trains, since the nitty gritty of the whole thing isn't what you are dealing with, but your accuracy and mental calculations.

Also waiting
Hey Phil and Jesseladrian,
As Phil well knows, I'm also waiting since well before May. I check the email every other day and I've stopped worrying about it too much. There's plenty of people on the same bicycle as us. So just sit it out and we'll get a stage 3 invite eventually. PS. Didn't want say "in the same boat" as they've already been mentioned. Other forms of transport have also apart from bicycles, buses and hovercraft! |
Hi guys. I emailed HR a few weeks ago regarding when stage 3 dates will come out. Got a prompt response. They'll be out in the new year. Everyone waiting on a date will receive an email telling them the dates are up and it'll be first come first served to book a date. This should allow you to stop checking the link every day.

All of us coming to blows. Slaps n wallows all over around
|
Indeedy, I think I'll still be checking regularly. After all if I have to I'll be at fisticuffs with Chocolate Hobnob for places, some epic film-like dual on a moving steam engine! (We needed the obscure vehicle reference I felt)
|
"Dear Jessel
Thank you for your email. We will release further dates in the New Year, probably at the end of January. You will automatically be emailed. The email will contain a link to a live site so you should respond as soon as you are able as times and dates will be taken up quickly. Your application in the meantime will not be affected. With kind regards" |
NATS 'gateway game'
Hello - can anyone help me understand the Gateway Game on the NATS Atco Careers website?
I've tried sending targets through the gates in every possible combination of direction and order, but always get a 'game over'! Untitled Document Thanks - David |
David,
thanks for the link, superb! If it helps, I can't do any of these games either, in spite of 29 years as a NATS operational ATCO. In all that time, never ever saw a "sprite" on the radar. :E Love your 'ident'. LIC 545 KHz, just south of the A38. A sad day when she was finally switched off. :ok: P.S. If it helps, 'PEDIG' is more or less the same position. Have a guess why it's called PEDIG. :} |
ZOOKER -
I'd love someone to shed some light on that one - I've no idea why it would end up as 'PEDIG', think I'm missing something. :} As for those games they claim they show your ability to control - but your 29 years would say otherwise! I'm another one of those in the queue waiting for NATS to open their doors for new applicants. But, at least it's giving me extra time to swot up on all the aircraft stats... |
PEDIG is named after Marstons Psdigree, a splendid ale brewed nearby at Burton-On-Trent.
Many of of the older waypoints are named after ground 'features' or even people. Good luck with the application process. It seems to change frequently, but there is lots of useful information and help on here. Have you had a go at the 'Air Traffic Chief' game yet? No coloured shapes, but loads of planes! |
Can non-EU citizens apply for NATS? I'm from Ukraine.
|
You need to be eligeble to work in the UK, if you're not a EU-citizen this may mean you have to sort out some visa or work permit, not sure how that works though as I'm a EU-citizen myself.

Distance Learning Pack
Hi
Trying to get a head start with my NATS career! I understand that once you have successfully passed the NATS tests and interviews to become an ATCO you are sent a 'distance learning pack', has anyone received one of these recently and could tell me what it comprises off so I know what to start looking at now! MTIA |
Surely someone can answer this question?
