Out of interest - How long does it take to qualify as an ATC? Not thinking of joining, but interested in knowing the level of training involved. Ta.

By "quieter", you obviously mean less than 59 movements per hour/ per runway?
So that'll be everywhere then? :ugh:

And are there periodic "checks" and never ending exams?

depends on the Unit Training Plan.

We are subject to quarterly checks, of which three consist of one of the unit Licence Competency Examiners (LCEs) sitting behind you for an hour or so, and the other is the same check followed by an oral board.
Additionally, because we work in watches - some units don't - we always have an LCE working with us and a "background eye" is always present. This doesnt mean (at our place anyway) that the LCE is always snooping or listening, but if standards fall below those required they can do something about it. Equally, what the LCE sees and hears contributes to assessments for further training or promotion.

Further exams are only part of the process of getting more ratings on your licence or for internal promotion etc.

I thought time at the college was longer. Anyone care to share how long it took from college start date to a valid rating somewhere, out of interest?
