Ryanair

Hi everyone. Does anybody know why Ryanairs code is FR. Its just i really would like to know what the association is.

Hi.

We in ATC use a different code for identifying aircraft operators than airlines themselves. airports and travel agetns etc. We use a three letter code, and Ryanair is RYR to us.

As to the answer to 'why FR?, I have no idea. Perhaps posting this in the 'Airport, Airlines and Routes' Forum might get an answer....

Ryanair was the brainchild and originally financed by the Ryan Family, multi millionaires in other sectors of industry, (as well as Tony Ryan being an Irish international rugb y union player).

FR = Family Ryan?

You don't necessarily get the code you want, it would depend on what was available.Presumably IATA are the final arbiters.
