Ouch! :D
Even working at a 'imposter' H24 unit, I can recognise that starting work at 0315 is probably the worst time, physiologically speaking. (edit for spelling...I've been awake for hours.....) |
I think all you Johnny Foreigners should get your unions to negotiate the six on, four off that we do. |
Nah, you UK nancy boys should demand to be put onto something other than the 6-4. Real shift work Actually, Jerricho, you've done me a great service by starting this thread - I am now certain that I don't want to work in Canada/Oz/USA etc... |
"The Grass is always Greener"
What would be really good in Australia is a limitation to actual hours plugged in , like the UK SCRATCOH. |
I see that our usual shift pattern in the US has already been posted. I will add however that the FAA looked at Shift Logic and thought it was GREAT stuff. The union had other ideas and we haven't used it. However, our administrator (headshed) thinks that this split shift thing is the cats meow... We know that when we start up our contract negotiations that is one thing that they are probably going to bring up. I expect we will go to the mat on this one, but what do I know <G>, I am not on the contract negotiating team, nor do I want to be.
Most of us have been talking about the split shift thing and I can't find ANYONE who is in favor of it that actually works traffic. All we have heard from our breathern to the north is that it is crap. I believe them. All in all, makes me really happy that in another 11 months I will have a throw down badge <G>... regards Scott |
The day to midnight quick change is only a recent arrival here. There was apparantly a vote (don't remember it, so it was probably before I got here) to see if people would be willing to start their cycle with an early (ie midnight) and they voted no. So now we can't start a cycle before 0530, hence the quick change. I wouldn't mind a whole cycle of mids. I wouldn't do any earlies at all then!
I was talking with our union guy today and it may well get looked at again soon. The thought of doing them is worse than the actual event in my experience, and I hate getting up early! Just see what the next contract brings Jerricho! Just don't hold your breath.;) |
Cossak my friend, I'm quivering with anticipation.

Interesting thread.
I'm also interested in not just what shift you work, but how long you are plugged in. We (some of us) do the MMAANNSOOO, or MMBBNNSOBBAANNSOOO where B= standby 24 hrs. You are plugged in at least 1 1/2hrs on, 1/2 hr off. Can be asked to work up to 2 1/2hrs on, 1/2 off. |
No actual rules here in Canada reference time in position. Just depends upon one's toilet stop requirements (like a certain friend of mine who works with Plazbot :E)
|
UK legal max is 2 hours then 1/2 hour off. At busy units max by local agreement is 1 1/2 hour on, 1/2 hour off.

Utilisation of the shift ( admittedly a 'tight' day):
1100-1200 Radar App position 2 1:00 hr 1200-1310 Radar App position '4' 1:10hr ----------------------------------- 1310-1330 Break :20 min ----------------------------------- 1330-1545 Radar App Position '2' 2:15 hr ----------------------------------- 1545-1610 Break :25 min ----------------------------------- 1610-1645 Radar App Position '3' 0:35 min 1645-1850 Radar App/Area Position '3&1 combined' 1:35 min ----------------------------------- 1850-1900 Break/Admin :10 min ----------------------------------- End Shift at 1900 Next Shift Start 0500 (10 hours break at home) 8 Hour Shift Breaks: 55 minutes Plugged In: 7:05hr on combination of 4 endorsements Apparently we need to increase our 'productivity' this year. The traffic level has risen by 15-20 %. Go figure. |
