User Preferred Routing
Moves are afoot in Australia to throw away all the lines on the map and let everybody fly whichever way they want to, wherever they want to. Our managers have deluded themselves that our ATC system can handle this, but the prospect gives me the willies. Anybody else brought this in yet? I believe there is a trial of such a concept in Alaska. What sort of automated confliction alerting is used to organise such a mess?

I don't know about civil trials of this kind of scheme, but UK military Area operations ATC could be seen as doing this (but the job is very different).
Also, NLR (Dutch Aerospace Laboratory) and the Catholic University of America did a trial of free flight which effectively got rid of the lines. You could try looking the results of that work. |
