Waypoint Naming

Who decides the names of waypoints?

Several years ago (when Paul Gascoigne played for Newcastle) a point called Gasko appeared south of Newcastle.

In the last lot of changes Begam? has materialised right next to it.

My son plays for Northwich juniors what are the chances?

Keygrip 18th Apr 2003 01:58

The mother of all waypoint namings must go to whoever designed the GPS approach to runway 16 at Plymouth, New Hampshire, USA.

IAF, a waypoint, FAF, MAP and Hold (which we will go round twice!!) are...

ITAUT, ITAWA, PUDYE, TTATT, IDEED, IDEED.

LAF he may have a chance since footballers' names are obviously popular. Next month sees the introduction of KEGUN as part of the EGGP STARs.

As well as KEGAN there's also BAROS - a point on the way into the LIVPO hold - another LFC footballer.

Just to balance it out between sports though, yet another new point will be called RUGER :D

Here is how waypoints and GPS fixes are named, at least this is the alledged procedure here in the US.

Two brain dead management guys sit at a table with an old bag of scrable pieces, they pick a piece out of the bag one at a time and lay it down in order drawn on the table, until they have five letters sitting face up on the table (before you ask the blank pieces screw them up all the time).

Once they have the five pieces layed out they yell down the hall to the next old guy, "hey Marvin, type these letters in and see if we already used them."

They repeat the process until they find a combination of five letters that haven't been used.

And you wonder why no one can pronounce any of the GPS fixes?

BOAC,

isnt there a story about DODSI amongst ATC....

something like; Pilot: "i'm just coming over DODSI"

ATC reply: "You dont know how lucky you are!"

New North Sea waypoint: GODOS.

I'm sure Delta (MUAC) sector controllers who are familiar with the work of Samuel Beckett are just aching to hear a pilot say, "Maastricht, we're waiting for [direct] GODOS".

(Or does nobody but me see the (albeit poor) humour in that?)

The FAFs at Stuttgart, Germany (EDDS) are named VATER (07) and UNSER (25).

"Vater unser" are the first words of the Lord's Prayer ("Our father in heaven") in German. Obviously, religious people over there.

whilst crossing towards bottom of saudi towards SEZ,two waypoints slowly scrolled up the fmc - DEDLI then OSAMA !!! makes u wonder - wondered if its game over when they hit the top !!

Don't Look Now 26th Apr 2003 23:20

There is a point here called LAMUR, pronounced with a thick french accent L'AMOUR.

One french female pilot transiting through asked "What do we do after L'AMOUR?".

Controller replied "Smoke a cigarette!"

Pilot "You can't say that!"

In Scottish Airspace, ITSUX, and if we feel like a direct route we can send someone ITSUX - MADAD.
Also going up to Copenhagen's airspace, LARGA - BUSOM, much to the delight of several BA crews who noticed it before us at ScACC.

beamwidth 27th Apr 2003 05:30

nothing gives a better pervy smirk at 4 in the morning than to tell some judy to route to nakid ( brest fir)

javelin 28th Apr 2003 16:49

Or that other venerable one -

'XXX 123 you're clear to DIKAS'

'Say what Ma'am ?'

StillDark&Hungry 28th Apr 2003 20:40

Following on from Beamwidth;

romeowiz 29th Apr 2003 21:39

Seem to remember when flying in to Houston, they had SLAMM, DUNKK, AKEEM and ROKIT, all related to basketball, I suppose!!

All this talk reminds me of trying to build rude route in the FMC on transatlantics, a few years ago ALING was a good combo with many others!;)

Quite enjoy being cleared direct to LARGA at the moment just looking for ROOBY !!

And this has just reminded me of a story of an A/C with Brest control ( French Accent of Course)Roger,Thees ees is Brest Control You are cleared to Berry Head !! Oh to be Roger!!

redsnail 12th May 2003 14:45
