Fallout from Sudoku

So, there I was enjoying summer in the backyard and trying to keep the brain cells exercised with a Sudoku puzzle. In one square the numbers could be 1,2,5 or 8. For some reason these numbers triggered a flash back to the late '70's, 125.8 was the TMA frequency for CLN out bounds from Heathrow. This set the brain off in a completely different direction, what other frequencies were in use at the time. Bearing in mind I haven't controlled in the UK since 1981 here is what came up:

CLN 125.8
DTY 129.6
DVR 128.4
BCN 131.2
COM 131.2 (weekends??)
SFD 127.1
MID 132.05
IBY 127.7

Am I close, I hate it how the old mind wanders, remembers stupid things from the past and yet I still have no idea what I had for (or even had) breakfast

From my own memory, so happy to be corrected, and relating to high level frequencies of the late 70s and general VOR area:

133.6 BCN

132.6 BHD

133.7 HON

134.25 North Sea

132.7 POL/WAL/IOM (later 131.05 - POL/128.05 – WAL/IOM)

134.85 NEW

135.85 Scottish

135.6 Shannon

123.95/127.65 Shanwick Oceanic Clearance

Nice to see a couple of ex-LL ATCOs still posting! It has been so quiet lately I was beginning to think I may be the last man standing! Nothing from HD,Window Job and Atco2 for ages.

kcockayne 18th Jul 2021 20:07

I seem to remember 135.05 & 129.2 in use on the HRN Sector in some capacity; & 132.3 for HRN Low - but this May have been some time later.

kcockayne 18th Jul 2021 20:13

Oh, & 134.45 on HRN. I think that 135.05 was switched over to WOR at some stage. When I arrived at Jersey, in 1978, we used to transfer a/c on White 8 (on course to LYD) to SFD, I think, on 127.7.

Still here!

Window Job

That's great news!

I forgot to mention 'Mines the Chevy' - not been here for a while.

134.75 was back then, traffic on the route LAM-POL. It was then allocated to a southbound route to the west. 133.6 the M4 to Strumble. 133.7 south into BNN

Liffy 1M 24th Jul 2021 22:58

I have an RAF en-route supplement from 1983 and it lists four LATCC frequencies: 125.8, 128.4, 128.9 and 132.05, which by my recollection were the initial frequencies for LHR departures.

Lissart 25th Jul 2021 11:58

I recall once, while on a few days leave, talking to a pilot friend who regularly overflew the place where I was valid. He went over a long way up but nonetheless suggested he give me a call on the tower frequency. "What's the frequency?" he asked. I couldn't remember!!!!!!!! So I'm full of admiration for folk who can retain frequencies in their heads from the early 80's!!!! (Strangely, as soon as I'd put the phone down it came back to me.....)

kcockayne 25th Jul 2021 17:39

I can go back to 1964 if you like, Lissart. But, on the other hand, some things from the 90s , 00s & 10s are a mystery to me !

Musket90 25th Jul 2021 18:28

I vaguely remember Scottish low level (FL240 and below) Dean Cross northwards in late 60's being 128.5.

ajbendel 17th Aug 2021 17:01

I remember when 132.05 went to 123.9 (deps via MID and CPT). Departures to the NW (now UMLAT) were 128.9. After the TMA, I think aircraft routing via SAM used 134.45, later 135.05 and 129.42, inbounds to BIG used 127.1, and outbounds via SFD used 127.7. 132.8 was for westbounds, then 133.6 as stated. Later, 132.8 was replaced by 134.75, which had been used, also as stated, for LAM-POL before that became 121.02.
