EU Class 3 Medical ATCO
 

Hi,

I have recently been accepted into NATS after completing their vigorous recruitment process.

I am going to be class 3 medical tomorrow and didn’t know what I should expect if anyone has gone through this before?

If you can fog a mirror you’ll be given a class 3 *

You’ll be asked about about your/family medical history, weighed, measured, samples of blood/urine taken, ecg, aural test, eyesight test (maybe done in advance) all the while being assessed for any phsycho tendencies.

* exceptions include: colourblindness; heart issues; drug use; mental health problems;

Congratulations on getting through the rest of it! It's a pretty thorough medical but the NATS AMEs are, in my experience, a top bunch of really good people who will put you at ease. You don't have to be Superman to get through it, but they need to be sure you're not going to keel over in front of a radar screen - if there's anything wrong, they'll find it, which is actually pretty reassuring, and not necessarily a 'fail' either.

The main thing is not to lie about any recorded medical conditions.
NATS AME’s and other AME’s which they use for the initial examination can have access to your medical records. If they find out something you “forgot” to mention it could cost you your job.
As mentioned above if there is anything unusual you may get referred to the CAA to review your case. This is not an automatic fail it just means you have to jump through some hoops to get the medical certificate ( which may cost you time and money e.g eight months and over one thousand pounds 😱 depending on the issues involved)
At the moment NATS are very good at holding a place for you on a later course.
I know it’s daunting but just relax, they are not trying to fail you.

What puzzles me is why a Class 3 medical for an ATCO over 70 lasts 12 months whilst a FISO Medical for over 70s (which is also valid for HGVs if you're that way inclined) only lasts for 6 months.

An excellent question Chevvron and one that I'm told is being looked at...

The FISO medical for over 70s is 'little and often' whilst the ATCO medical is thorough and robust. I know which I would rather have...

I've been trying to look for information online about the class 3 medical. I'm due to have mine in a few weeks time, but worried my over 35 BMI will fail me... I don't have any other health issues apart from this. Does anyone know how the medical examination process changes (if it does at all) when and if you don't meet the BMI requirements?

I've just had my medical and the Doc told me that if your BMI is over 35 then you'll be referred to the CAA for further testing and a chat with the. cardiologist, I think. Mine is under so I wasn't too interested, but there's several people at work who must be over 35 for being fat, not muscular and they're still controlling so it's obviously not a huge impediment.

like...are you feeling ok? Do you have any problems? and that was more or less all. Ah, yes, there was vision test :)
