RNAV app with procedure turn
 

Dear colleagues,

need your help regarding approach and situation generally.

Approach is RNAV(GNSS) RWY 10 at LIME (Bergamo, Italy), A/C perf.category C. Part of chart is attached.

Lets assume we are arriving from the South hdg 030 direct to BEG on 12500.

ATC: ABC123, descent at your discretion, cleared for the approach.
So the point is: what is the correct way to establish on the approach?
We do not have published racetrack (only holding over BEG which is not part of the app).

Is there any regulation that require pilot to proceed via procedure turn on his own?

It's just an "academic" example, but we have a long discussion with instructor.

I never flew any RNAV approaches so I don't know about any regulations. However in my opinion a procedure turn can be a good idea to start the approach. Otherwise if you reach the VOR on a heading of 030 and try to make a direct turn to 242 you will probably end up overshooting it by quite a bit. What I do know for sure is when a procedure turn is published for an APP, you must be within 30 degrees of the outbound leg in order to start the approach.

I'm sure you are right and this situation looks like that from my point of view.

But I'm trying to find any proofs from rules and regulations and spot the correct procedure (for example, ask ATC for procedure turn or just fly it; maintain MSA until established btwn IAF and IF or start descent when over VOR etc...)

Have a look in ICAO Doc8168 Vol 1 it’s got the answers there. Yes a procedure turn is required, capture angle for RNAV approach is 110degrees.

Turn right and do a procedure turn, then establish outbound in the published procedure. Its all shown in Jeppesen.

I don’t have the Jepp reference, but I don’t see where the PT comes in. It looks to my eye, that one would request one turn in the BEG hold, descending to 6,000’, exit the hold with a left turn to the outbound course. How would one fly unpublished PT.
