Baghdad APPCH

SERCO has asked to schedule an interview re: Baghdad APP ATCO. I have a list of questions & concerns to ask, but wondering if anyone out there has detailed knowledge that might provide me with more "insight."
Specifically looking for information regarding level of safety, living conditions, benefits, etc?????
Thanks......

Some insight and advice Baghdad

I'm just going to offer a few opinions on this contract. I have worked there previously. I left on my own accord.

Living accom. are adequate for the posting. Food is terrible and you have no alternatives however you can make do with the quality and selection.

It's a ME posting so you deal with culture, environment and so on of management and local authority as you would in any other messed up ME society and culture, enough said.

**The reason they (SERCO) have had openings for so long in Baghdad is the fact they are not compensating for the potential danger looming. Even when the US forces were there it had some serious potential threats from local infiltration. NOW with ISIS so close there is a real danger. I won't go into specifics of the security there but I can tell you the danger is real and no one in SERCO can manage or mitigate it. Yes they have and could go on for years without a significant incident or tomorrow could be an entirely different headline.

Everyone has different comfort levels and some may choose to take more risk than others. If they offered much more money I would be willing to assume the risk.

Make sure you spend a lot of time gathering information on what you are getting into and what you are being compensated for.

Be safe

Thanks very much ATCalert, for the insightful and thought-provoking response.
I have yet to be told what the "numbers" would be, but have decided it must be a substantial offer for me to seriously consider it.

Baghdad Numbers

Did you ever get an offer from serco for Baghdad and if so what are the numbers?

JAGH 7th Feb 2016 16:16

What's the story here boys and gals , the last post I read here said Serco had lost the contract but that post has since being deleted .
If Serco are indeed the contract holders when does this contract expire .

Correct me if I am wrong, but I heard EUR 16,000 net per month for Irak... at least that's what the headhunter who called me said... not enough for the risks in my opinion..

And those risks are??

Tower Ranger 20th Mar 2016 17:09

Fairly obvious I'd have thought.

Just curious as to what s/he perceives to be the risks given they haven't worked there

eastern wiseguy 26th Mar 2016 23:08

Tower Ranger has called it correctly. Surely there is a perception of danger and risk from the TV and press reports coming from the area?

I dunno...Baghdad...or Brisbane......which one do YOU think sounds the most risky to an outsider?

blissbak 27th Mar 2016 01:17

During the last Iraq war a Marine told his TV interviewer that Baghdad was much safer than his hometown, Detroit  .

THR RED ACC 27th Mar 2016 08:36

Yes Blissbak but marines are not particularly known for their high intelligence!

I would never work in the ME due to their backward ways!

RPMcMurphy 27th Mar 2016 09:45

After living in Erbil in Iraq/Kurdistan (delete where you wish) and then the UAE, I'd take Iraq any day. The SZR is much riskier than anything in Iraq... :-)

grizzled 27th Mar 2016 12:10

Although it's a bit "tongue in cheek" McMurphy sums up risk very well. Driving on SZR in Dubai involves constant hazard identification and risk mitigation. Tip for anyone new to driving in DXB: Don't ever drive in the far left lane whilst driving between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Not ever.

I have lived and worked in Kabul, Baghdad, Dubai and a dozen other places from North America to Africa to Southeast Asia. I can say with certainty that the biggest risk working for Serco in Baghdad is that the bar at Camp Serco will run out of beer on the weekend thanks to the Icelanders and the Canadians.
