CAP 493: Manual of Air Traffic Services Part 1 | Publications | About the CAA
Have fun...

YouSaidBolt 6th Feb 2014 18:19

Crazy cheers fella do you know where i can find the current book????

ZOOKER 6th Feb 2014 18:24

The link should take you to the current edition. Bear in mind it is not unit specific and should be read in conjunction with CAP493. - Have even more fun. :ok:

ZOOKER 6th Feb 2014 18:29

Oh, and don't forget to look at CAPs 168, 413, 637 and 744.
Oh, sorry nearly forgot good old '774. :E

YouSaidBolt 6th Feb 2014 18:34

Zooker cheers for replying but the link take me to a version that is in place from 6th March 2014 have i missed something or is that not in use right now?????

Gonzo 6th Feb 2014 18:41

YouSaidBolt,

The CAA update each edition of CAP493 MATS Part 1 by issuing Supplementary Instructions.

You could either read the current CAP493 with all the extant SIs, or you could read the March 2014 edition (as per the link) which incorporates those SIs into the text.

Crazy Voyager 6th Feb 2014 18:41

Publications with Titles Containing : cap493 | Publications | About the CAA

that shows as current and takes you to the link above, also see what Gonzo said above.

If you want to find another version search the CAA website and see what you come up with, there you also have loads of other documents including those mentioned above.

The one thing you won't find online is unit specific prodecures (mats pt2s) as these are not public documents.

ZOOKER 6th Feb 2014 18:44

Mmm, how odd. You could always check with the CAA's SRG tomorrow morning.
Don't forget to look at the NATS IAIP too.
The MATS Part 2, (local instructions relating to specific ATS units), is not usually available to those not employed by the unit ANSP.

YouSaidBolt 6th Feb 2014 18:46

Sorry for not explaining myself but I appreciate your responses...... If the version that is the only one online that can be found and does not come into use until 6th march which one is in use now????? If you need to print a current one for the legal rules of today what would you do??????

Crazy Voyager 6th Feb 2014 18:53

Try this link

Publications with Titles Containing : cap493 | Publications | About the CAA

What I did was use the previous search but change the filter to show "all" instead of just "Current and future".

HEATHROW DIRECTOR 6th Feb 2014 19:18

YouSaidBolt. I know this has been mentioned before, but why so many ????s?

YouSaidBolt 6th Feb 2014 19:33

Crazy thanks again for the steer i think i get it now.not sure how a book can be current before the start date and a previous one superceded.which one are atc units working from

Gonzo 7th Feb 2014 08:05

At a busy, complex unit there might literally be hundreds of supplementary procedures published every year, hype they permanent, temporary or perhaps just information to be promulgated.

Our local rule book, the MATS Part 2, is usually published twice a year, so towards the end of each six month period, the four hundreds page document might be modified by well over fifty or so procedures that have been introduced since that edition of the MATS Part 2 was published.

Keeping on top of all the procedures is one of the more challenging aspects of the job.

YouSaidBolt 8th Feb 2014 14:57

You are right -

it is not that difficult.
I have noticed though, that the website link that was given earlier now shows as having the in date version listed as current (it was marked as superseded) and the newer version is showing as future and not current.from that I can guess that it was wrong and is now right but i guess lookingforajob knows better than me and others

thanks for the polite replies every-one

YouSaidBolt 8th Feb 2014 14:59

gonzo-that sounds like hard work.surely you have an implementation date like we do in software version control and work on the book you describe with an implementation date published.you wouldnt release that book before its due date AND mark the old one superseded would you???(just trying to get my head around this)

Gonzo 8th Feb 2014 16:59

No, you publish, say, edition 1.14 on 1 March 2014. Then a change to an existing procedure is needed on, say, 6 March 2014, which gets published as Supplementary Instruction no.1/14. Then another one the next week as SI 2/14. So now the text in the Manal is incorrect, the new text in the SIs is correct. In the third week of March a Temporary Operational Instruction no.1/14 is published, which modifies the procedure in SI 2/14.

So the original text is modified by the SI, which in turn is modified by the TOI. Once the TOI expires, as all do, then the procedure reverts back to that of the SI.

If procedure changes are being introduced many times a week, you're not going to publish a whole 500 page manual every time a new procedure is introduced.
