Closure of Border and Highland JATCRU's
 

Can anyone remember what year these units closed ?

Their tasks went to Scottish ATCC and Manchester ACC. I know it was the late 1980's from memory and various online searches, but looking for something more specific.

Ahhh JATCRUs. when ATC was good, sorry can't help you with exact dates just wallowing in nostalgia.:ok:

Can't help with exact dates either although 1989 for Highland resonates around the old memory cells. Don't forget that the bulk of the Highland Radar latter days workload - Offshore Helicopters - transferred, along with most (if not all?) of the staff, to Aberdeen. One of them is still working here so if no response forthcoming I will ask when our rosters cross next week.

Border civil I think was in late 1987 early 88, I was nearly posted there in 86. Highland civil must have been in late 1990, again I visited the top of the hill earlier in that year.

Hope it narrowed it down a bit.

ps to clear up any confusion which may have been caused, Dallam Tower was a pub not a VCR!

Just had lunch with one of the ATSAs who was transferred from Boumer to EGCC along with the 'Border Rdar' function. The move took place in September, 1987 or '88, he wasn't sure which. The Pennine/Border SATCO usually joins us too, but was away today.
The original Border frequency prior to the move was, I believe, 132.8MHz.
When the task was transferred, it was carried out from the 'standby Mediator Suite at the NW end of the sub-centre ops-room using the call-sign 'Pennine Radar' using (I think), 128.67Mhz transmitted from GDF.
The task became known variously as 'The Pennine Way', or 'Byker Grove', by the other MACC ATCOs. It was manned by an ATCO and dedicated ATSA.
I'll follow-up with year hopefully, later.

I am sure one of the frequencies ( high level? ) at Border was 134.85, now back in use as Moray Low at ScATCC or if you want to be pc PC!

I'm sure it was in 1970! Upper Blue 13, DOG-NEW, I think Northern (Lindholme) and Eastern (Watton) used to handover to Border at Flam, ISTR…

132.8 was a long-standing LATCC DVR sector high-level eastbound freq, so I'd be surprised if it was repeated at Border.

Sorry, finger-trouble Talkdownman, it was 132.9.

I think I am fairly certain that none of the Pennine Radar ATCOs was possesed of a huge organ.:ok:

My LCE checks were renowned for their degree of rigour.

I was one of the last ATSAs at Border before it closed. Detached from Scottish it was a great unit with a great boss in George Brown. Fond memories indeed!

I was there from Nov87 to May88 it closed about 6 months later.

Thanks folks. Border seems to have a lot of corroboration that its closure was in 1988. Conflicting memories put Highland closure anywhere between 1985 and 1990 !! :ok:

I started on area in 1987 and did the NE Sector which was then 126.65. I'm fairly I certainly remember transferring an aircraft leaving at Pole Hill to Border on that frequency. I should have some old documents filed away somewhere, which I'll try and find. Is it possible Ulster closed before Border and the frequency was re-allocated? I can't remember any reference to Ulster Radar in the EGCC MATS 2, but of course that in itself doesn't mean it wasn't still there.

Ulster Radar closed in 1978 when Atlantic House became operational.

Tdm is correct about the Ulster frequency. I have just found a high-resolution photograph of the Sub-Centre taken for Plessey Radar and on the overhead display above the SW sector controller position it clearly shows Ulster Radar 132.9. The picture dates from 1975/'76, just after operations moved from PATCRU/Barton Hall.

I think 132.9 went into the 'special events' frequency pot along with 121.17 and the like. I'm pretty sure that in recent years I have used it, maybe for event ATIS or temp helipads. We never got any calls over Great Orme Head though…

I'm trying to remember the Northern RASA freq where we used to thread Norjets from the Pole up to Buckden and Stainmoor thence across to NV and NT without bumping into somebody… Anybody from Lindholme remember the annoying tannoy "civil controller to console 5b…" ?

…and, interestingly, 126.65 is my current day-job second-hand freq…!

I was an Atco at Border from 1973-78 so recall not that brilliant, but I'm pretty sure the RASA frequency was 131.05 which I think is still in use somewhere at Swanwick.
