NOTAM - re Olympics, airfield co-ordination/slots
Just read today's NOTAMs.
I suspect that "the system" is practicing for the Olympics and therefore about to bring forwards the agony, but can someone explain the implications of this to a confused ATPL(H) totally unused to being subject to the slot system? These are airport slots run by ACL Ltd on behalf of the airfield operators. They are in place to ensure that there is enough concrete available for any flights which arrive at the affected airports during the notified period. You could compare it to a form of PPR.
They are a different beast from ATC slots, which are slots for airspace, and ATC slots are run totally separately and on a more tactical basis, based on Flight Plan data. |
Thanks for that, PR. seeing as EGLW doesn't appear on the list, (nor does any private landing site feeding to or from there) do you think is it correct to assume that the system for helicopters will be run separately?

Shy - I can see why people can get easily confused and frustrated - Surely the validity period in the Notam header indicates 2011?
Regarding helicopter operations, I believe that there is still ongoing consultation regarding the final procedures. BTW, been a long time since we last spoke - ex NHT ATCO. |
Brilliant - test it in August, by far the quietest month for business aviation airfields....!

Anyone know who Airport Coordination Limited is ie are they aviators of some sort or just civil servants with virtually no knowledge of aviation? Have airport operators actually agreed to this company allocating landing slots at their airfield or has it been imposed by the government?

Yes, they have done it before: Heathrow, Gatwick and others all have their slot co-ordination done by ACL. |

The airfield where I work is is listed but is VFR/FISO so we don''t need slots for arrivals.
