who in the uk is recruiting?
 

Hello all,

Does anyone know which airports in the UK are recruiting at the moment? Or are likely to be in the near future?

Just thinking of a change of scenery after 6years at the same airport.
Valid on tower and radar, would consider anywhere in the uk really.

But I've no idea what the job market is like for atco's these days?

Do NATS still only employ through their own college?

Not if you have a valid ATC licence and the requisite ratings. I joined back in 1971 and just had to do the Approach Radar course as I already held a UK Licence.

Unfortunately, NATS are not recruiting but you can find the latest info on their web site.

However, here goes.

Many airports have, or will have impending vacancies but few are willing to to go to the expense of advertising as they either have their own trainees coming through their own training programmes, or they have enough people "on file" (i.e. folk who've applied speculatively) who meet the unit requirements.

If you are really serious about moving on, then send your best CV and a hand written covering letter to the GMATS (by their name, not just their Management position) of every airport you'd like to work at.
I'm not teaching you how to suck eggs when I say that, but you'd be suprised how many people can't be arsed to do so and find out who they're actually writing to and they automatically lose brownie points as a result.

As has been alluded to elsewhere, there's a bit of a battle going between NATS Airport Management and NATS HR.
From my contacts within Senior Level at NATS, Airport GMATS have a good idea of what their professional staffing requirements are for the near future, HR haven't a clue about much apart from number crunching but they currently hold the upper hand. There's no harm in applying to both the Airport GMATS (same rules a above apply) and NATS HR, at least they'll have your details on file.

All I'd say is that, unless you are really unhappy where you are or you really have to move for other reasons, think carefully about where your future may lie.
Unless there are good career reasons and a big salary increase involved which can justify the hassle and move from being a big fish in a small pond to a small chap in a big lake, I can't see the point.

Self promoting dross

I suspect that "Self Promoting Dross" was aimed at me.
I had posted in response to Gisajobs post about the wonders of Safeskys and their ATC Contracts, unfortunately when ammending a typo on that post I pressed the delete button and didn't realise until today I'd deleted the whole of my post.

Anyway, the jist of it was that;

1) It appears that Safeskys are the provider of ATC at Dunsfold. It has been asked a number of times if Safeskys have CAA Approvals to provide this service. No answer has been forthcoming and the latest response confirms my own personal opinion that Safeskys do not have any such requisite approvals, but I am prepared to stand corrected if Gisajob gives us all full details.
2) Gisajob made a recent post which he has now deleted, which claimed that they also had a contract to provide ATC at another Airport in the South of the UK, he has refused to say which airport this is.
3) He said on his website that he "plans to bid for the contract at Nth Denes and at Gibraltar", providing ATC and FISO at the latter. I could bid for either of those, but I know that FISO never has and never will be provided at Gibraltar.

As I say, Gisajob has withdrawn his own post probably because he knows it lacked any credibility as does his response to mine. He's also changed the content of the Safeskys website since his original deleted post here, which speaks volumes.

I'll leave you to make your own minds up as to what sort of potential employer he may or may not be.

From what I have seen there is no ATC Unit at Dunsfold, according to Pooleys Guide it is A/G only.

Can anyone throw any light on what is, or maybe happening at Dunsfold?

If an ATC Unit is planned anyone know of any vacancies here or anywhere in the UK for someone with a Student ATCO Licence desperate not to loose it for not being able to start training at an ATC Unit? APCs are getting increasingly expensive to fund with no income.

Whilst your Pooleys might be currently correct on its content relating to Dunsfold (I don't know because I have nothing to refer to and this may be why you're using a Pooleys) should you ever need to study an Aerodrome's particulars at any time in the future such as for employment interviews etc, I suggest you burn your Pooleys and refer to the only official source which has few errors in, the AIP.

I witnessed an interview a few years ago (prior to the AIP being as accessible as it is today) during which the interviewee answered all the questions thrown at her having only ever studied a Pooleys (or was it an AFE Flight Guide) and not one answer was correct! All the data had changed (including runway orientations!) about 9 months earlier!:eek:

I thought A/G had become AGCS?

Both used, AGCS as the formal title, A/G as the abbreviation in the AIP notification.

Dunsfold is still A/G but staffed mostly by personnel with ATCO Licences and A/G Certificates. Paperwork (Mats Pt2, UTP) is being written/re-written; most equipment (radios, recorder, weather station) has been delivered and is awaiting installation.

UK policy is that only licensed aerodromes appear in the AIP, nothing would give me greater pleasure if the data was available, after all the AIP is free.

Dunsfold operators presently have no plans to licence the airfield as their prime money making activity is hiring out the runway to McLaren/Top Gear etc. and the OFZ is infringed by hardware connected to this, but the ATC unit will need to be licenced of course.
A hearing for a 'Certificate of Lawful Use' (unlimited movements 24/7) commences shortly. I'm told this is different to a planning appeal.

I've heard certain Nats units are recruiting externally at the moment?
