use of the phrase "heavy" in call sign/ICAO
Understand it is not used in ICAO ops however does anyone have a reference source??
Need to show physical proof Thanks BBFive |
Don't know your legislation but, for FAA it is: Appendix A of the FAAO 7110.65R "Air Traffic Control";
in the UK it is CAP413 chapter 1.8.5; they all refer to ICAO DOC 4444...... |
ICAO Doc 4444...
4.9.2 Indication of heavy wake turbulence categor For aircraft in the heavy wake turbulence category the word “Heavy” shall be included immediately after the aircraft call sign in the initial radiotelephony contact between such aircraft and ATS units. |

Interesting. When was that introduced please? |
IIRC 2nd July 2009, Amendment 4, MATS Part 1.
The phraseology was changed from 'Vortex Wake/Wake Vortex' to 'Wake Turbulence' and the recomended distances were reduced for arrival spacing. Oh and 'spacing' was changed to 'distance' Casper |
OK... many thanks.
