Pole Hill SIDs
 

Ladies and gents,

What is the correct way for these to be passed over the R/T ? I frequently hear, for example, "ABC123, cleared Seaton, Pole 8N Departure..." rather than "Pole Hill 8N... The beacon's full name is Pole Hill but it appears on some publications as "POL". Which version is correct, or are both acceptable ?

Pole Hill is what should be said over the R/T just people doo soof have weird accents and "pole hill" can sound like "poleil" :)

I agree, although speaking as a non-professional, that the clearance should be passed with "Pole Hill" spoken in full. After all, I wouldn't expect to hear
ATC transmit "G-CN, route GASKO, Pole, Trent" for example. "Trent" can't be abbreviated.

ATC should never transmit as it means diddily squat! It is "Pole Hill" and never "Pole"

What about the age old 'Dean Cross' vs 'Deans Cross' chestnut :hmm:

I've heard there was once an examiner at Scottish who would come down hard on students saying "deans cross". :ok:

I still hear other Pilots accepting directs to "The Pole". Many have used that term for years.

I suppose it could could cause some confusion for non UK based flights.

I've always wondered why, in the London TMA, aircraft route to "The Park" but rarely "The Hill".

Do not agree.If you look in the AIP AD-6-6 section for EGCC SID's, they are listed as POL5R, POL4S ,POL1Z and POL1Y. No mention anywhere about POLE HILL5R etc,etc. EGGP's are called POL4T and POL5V. EGNM call theirs POL1W or POL1X. The beacon is correctly named POLE HILL but once again to confuse matters, if you tune into it on 112.10mhz you get P-O-L as the ident. I would say that the correct way is just POL..., because that is what is on the AIP SID plates. Secondly POL... is also what appears on the flight progress strip once a flight plan has been filed.:ok:

Work in progress - even though it is commonly referred to as a "pole" departure I can confirm that the full title of the VOR should be used ie "Pole Hill 5R departure". By your logic the Honily 1Y departure would be referred to as a "hon" departure as it is shown on charts etc as HON.

Cleared the Pole, sounds neat, and always used it in the past.

Like wise the Cross, and Biggin.

But then Brookmans, not the Park.

BookEm - I'd like to add. If you look on the AIP AD-6-6 for EGCC SIDS it actually does say Honiley 1Y or Honiley 1R at the top of the plate (correct spelling;)), so your arguement falls down because it doesn't say HON at top of the plate where the Pole Hill SIDs do say POL. Out of all the EGCC SID plates its only the Wallasey and Pole Hill SIDs which don't give the full name at the top. I would say it's a 50/50 split from an ATCO's point of view if they clear a/c on a Pole or Pole Hill departure. Maybe the plates need ammending to give the beacon/fix's full title. :ok:
