NATS airspace CD
 

Hello.


Just recently came to know about it's existance. It is supposed to offer a dynamic guide to those intrested in becoming ATCO. Anybody have it or know how can I get it?

The document I got the info was from 2006, so maybe the CD doesn't exist anymore.

The CD certainly did exist. However it was produced a good few years ago, from what I recall it had the old NATS branding, so that gives an idea of its age.

I don't think it is in existance or given out anymore. I think all the information that was contained on it can be found on the ATCO Careers website Roffa has linked.

Yep, I still have that old NATS airspace CD titled 'The art and science of air traffic control'. I believe it dates from 1999 and as aerotech rightly points out it has the old NATS branding so is quite old now (but still has relevant info on it!) The format of the CD pertains towards being designed for schools & colleges.

However having just dug it out of my file and looked on the back cover it was produced by GTI Specialist Producers based in Oxon, www.gti.co.uk Tel 01491 826262- you never know your luck they may still have a few copies collecting dust in their archives!!

@classicwings: I am intrested in the CD becuse of the "24 hours in the NATS" and "about NATS" sections. Are they informative?

Killua- I would like to answer your query but having unsuccessfully just tried running the program on my laptop I believe my technology is too advanced for it so gives you an idea of how old it is!!:} It was designed for the Windows 95 operating system which proves how old it is........... As I recall controllers are interviewed about the 24 hour operation, their thoughts on working night shifts:bored: is covered and overall it gives a good basic introduction into airspace/ATC within NATS. It may be worth your while contacting NATS CTC directly to see if they have possibly released a more upto date version of the CD.

Just be aware that the 2010 NATS is a very different animal indeed to the 1999 NATS.

In fact so much has changed in all respects since 1999 I honestly think you'd be better off discounting such an old CD, it may do more harm than good if you're considering using it to prep for applying to the company.

This CD was published before one used to apply to 'the company'. Oh how things have changed in NATS for sure.

How did one used to gain employment with NATS then if not by applying to join the company? <insert head scratching smiley here>

Ohh, I dont really feel obliged to reply but I somehow feel it is necessary to point out that NATS employees worked for the government prior to privatisation (before it became a private company).

Between 1972 and 1996, NATS staff were CAA (a public corporation) employees There was a gradual transfer of staff between Civil Service between 1972 and 1974 - some non-specialists refused the move and transferred out of the aviation departments back to the general Civil Service. There was subsequently a low level of exchange of generally high-level staff between the Authority and the Civil Service. Jobs were advertised in the general and specialist press (such as Flight magazine) and formal applications had to be made. Employment contracts were transferred to NATS when it became a subsidiary of the CAA in 1996. Job applications were then made to the Personnel Department (before the days of Humane Resources) of NATS, a situation which did not change with the transfer of NATS to the Department against Transport or the Public Private Pratnership.

Spot on. I seem to remember those in the ATC jobs being told that there were no suitable positions available in the Civil Service and is was 'Like it or lump it'. i.e. transfer or find another job!
Not quite the privileged situation that the 'Green Eyed One of the many tentacles' implied.
