Com SOP's
What is the general consensus on the use of your com radios?
A. #1 Primary (all ATC), #2 Secondary (ATIS, unicom, FSS, air to air, etc.) B. #2 Primary with #1 Secondary (as above) C. #1 Primary (ATC air), #2 Secondary (ATC ground, ATIS, unicom, FSS, etc.) D. Other It would be helpful if you could include your type of operation (airline, corporate, 135, etc), two pilot / single pilot, and type of equipment. Also mention whether this is your personal preference or company policy. Please include any brief explanation to justify your choice. I know what I prefer, I just want to see if I'm in the majority or the loose wheel! Thanks, |
In my company ,airline ,when copilot is Pf is
A. #1 Primary (all ATC), #2 Secondary (ATIS, unicom, FSS, air to air, etc.) when cap. flying then on copilot radio is ATC this is company policy ,even i am not agreed |
This is not a trick question! I would really appreciate a few more comments to come up with a consensus. Our company policy dictates a procecedure that I personally feel compromises safety and I'm trying to get enough replies that would show a trend.

Airline ops, only 2 crew operation. On the boeing fleet (dunno about the airbus) we use COM 1 as primary ATC communication. COM 2 is usually used for 121.5 listening watch except when close to the UK, then its volume to zero or tuned to something else due to the innane practice pan chatter, apart from that it is used for OPS, ATIS when the field in question does not have a datalink ATIS. COM 3 is allways tuned on the DATA frequency and in standby on 121.5, basicly its used by ACARS only. HF is set to some standard frequency, but usually never used except in the very rare occurrence when flying oceanic routes.
