Countries Hiring Controllers
Hey all. I am new to this website (was told about you all from a controller in Canada). I am currently a controller at JFK and have had an interest in doing ATC in another country. My first 2 thoughts were Canada and Australia -- however, both those countries said I had to be a citizen or landed immigrant to even apply. Are there other options for me? Thank you very much! Wish you all the best.

I believe the german ATC provider (DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH - www.dfs.de) is still looking for "ready-entry" ATCOs, aka fully trainied ATCOs that only need on the job training. Their current job-ad can be found here.

@melbATC:
I assume that traveling cost is not refounded like it is the case with Eurocontrol? |
The GCAA are recruiting for Area Control in Abu Dhabi and possibly still Tower/Approach or Dubai is usually interested in new people for Approach. (Not sure if they are actively recruiting at the moment though).
If you apply for Australia don't be surprised if you don't get anywhere near an Approach Unit, there is an internal waiting list a mile long for these jobs. You will probably end up in one of the Area Sectors in either Brisbane or Melbourne. |

Regarding Airservices
Actually or any country -- I have done my job in the tower. I would prefer to stay in a tower. Are these companies open to allowing applicants to stay in the area they have their experience in? Again, thank you. I enjoy this site so far ..

However due to some new towers and changes being made in some existing towers there will be a large need for more tower controllers in the coming months. |
Will you be taking the kids with you?
|
What counties are hiring?
Aberdeenshire are always looking ;) Oh sorry you said countRies ;) |
Hey. It is just me. No kids. I don't even have a lot of stuff. I might just take 2 suitcases with me. I do want to stay in the tower environment. I saw Airservices hiring but I don't meet the work permit status. I was thinking of applying and putting in the cover letter that I am aware I do not meet that requirement, but I would like to be considered if they change that requirement sometime soon. Any opinions?
As far as Dubai goes -- thanks for offering to help. I was thinking more of Canada, Australia ... Again, thanks for all your help. |
Quid Pro Quo!
Makes me laugh when guys from the US go looking elsewhere when others can't go to the US and work. An open and free market is great, so why does the US consider their homeland security so important than other nationalities couldn't possibly be trusted? Why wouldn't the same apply in Oz or Canada or anywhere else for that matter? :ugh: |
Dubai jobs
Hi all. I am interested in talking to anyone in Dubai at the moment and chat about what the job is like. I have taken interest in the current advertisement. Please PM me.

Needless to say that answers why USA requires citizenship for ATCOs job are stupid,at least... :E Could you imagine that some North Korean guy, working on KJFK cleranace delivery says: United yx cleared to .... :E:E:E |
Security.......... or is it paranoia? :)
|
Could you imagine that some North Korean guy, working on KJFK cleranace delivery says: United yx cleared to .... Why would a controller who passes all the security checks from these countries not be safe to work in the US? |
Hey all. Yes I am an American controller. But with respect, I am not responsible for the rules. I hope none of you are actually hating on me because I happen to be born where I was. I'd love more than anything to move to another country but I can't. I guess everyone always thinks the grass is greener on the other side -- just lots of us can't get over the fence.
|
Clear2land78, I think Red Dragon was being critical with the situation, not with you. Don't worry, nobody hates you ;)
|
Why can't you move?
:confused:There are,or were Americans working in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Hong Kong and possibly now in Muscat.:ok:

Working in Canada
Clear2land78, you don't want to come up to Canada right now. Nav Canada has invested HEAVILY in simulator software which uses "voice activation". By that I mean it uses very little interaction with a real person.
They are in the process of "letting go" all the staff which run the simulators. But the main problem is that the software doesn't run. They have had to shut down almost all of the courses. However, the current courses are continuing with people acting the parts of pilots, but once they are completed they will shut down training or almost until they figure out what they are going to do with the "new voice activated simulator" that doesn't work. What nav canada doesn't get is there are still pilots flying aircraft and until the they get rid of pilots, having simulation software that does NOT represent the real world will actually extend the amount of time it takes someone to check out. Please do not ask me where I work, as I could get fired for telling all. Another great reason to work for nav canada. |
Awe .. no one hates me .. :) I am so happy!! Thanks:)
|
Nav Canada and Voice simulation
ATC roger ..thank you for your input .. we have started using tower sims here .. I do not like it either as it does not reflect real world. I promise not to ask where you work:)
|
Are you still interested in Australia?
|
Clear2Land... Best of luck, my friend. I would strongly advise you to think about "cost of living" in your plans. There are few places on earth which are as cheap to live as the US, although Australia came pretty close last time I was there about 3 years ago. The UK, and probably much of Europe, is akin to living in hell!! I doubt if there's any ATC facility out side the US which would provide as much job satisfaction... but a few places we've been in the Pacific where the guy works a couple of hours then goes fishing for the rest of the day weren't bad!!
|
Consider your international training and experience and if you decide to venture into the private sector, you will always go in with two buckets. The money and BS bucket. Which ever fills first is sign to depart the pattern.....
|
I do not know why issues are what they are. I do not control them. :( I hope you don't count that against me. LOL.
|
Red Dragon,
You can go and work in the USA if you want to. Like almost all other countries if you have a skill that can not be found within its own population or if an employer has tried to recruit someone but has had no success, they can then hire a foreigner and apply for a work visa. If you train to be a nurse I expect you will be able to find a job in the US. If there are enough controllers in the US why should they hire foreign ones? There are not enough in Aus so they hire foreign ones. Simple really or are they sour grapes? |
I think security is only a part of it. Americans being Americans, if word got out that the FAA was hiring "foreigners" the general population would be furious.
You must be a US citizen to be hired in the USA. A green card is not enough. |
Also, in the USA don't bother applying if you are over 31.
|
But most of the USAs' population are, technically, 'foreigners'.
