<<The organisation said all aircraft had been accounted for and in voice contact with air traffic control centres. >>
Well that's a relief...... so easy to lose a few here and there.. |
This is the quote I'm seeing everywhere.
"The organisation added all aircraft were accounted for and in voice contact with control towers" |
I believe an engineer selected shut down all radar monitors by mistake. I would have thought there would have been a fail safe choice like..........
"are you really sure you want to do this ?" :eek: I also believe "bonuses were never compromised and at no time was there any danger of management ever getting it right" :} thank god for that :D |
At least the BBC didn't waste any more licence fee money chartering a helicopter to flog around under the TMA so Brian Hanrahan could say "I counted them all out and counted them in again" ! :}
|
i'm sure its a one in a million years type event , i'm sure its ok now........
hmmm better grab the mats pt 2 and remind myself of those backup procedures again :E |
<<i'm sure its a one in a million years type event >>
Yeah..... I've had a few of those. After one "frightener" I was assured that it would be OK for the next 999,999 years. |
There were plenty of "chocolate fire guards" in suits ( without ties :cool:) milling around trying to pretend they were justifying their jobs.......... :}

I've looked, there is no contingency, it'll never happen!:ok: |
1 in million????
Try twice in 3 or 4 years!! But nope, it'll never happen again! Until the next time....... |
It was fun on the other side of the fence too, at least we still had radar!
|
Will they never learn? What happened to the culture of safety?
FWIW somebody pulled the plug at Maastricht UAC back in the 1970s with similar results luckily on a weekend IIRC so no great panic from La Belle Étage. It became the first study case on safety evaluation courses |
I think this possibility for total radar failure (14 minutes in this case :eek:) was highlighted previously when the new equipment was installed and tested at PC.
No doubt "risk management" decided that there was only an extremely remote chance it would happen :uhoh:. |

When I did my Area Procedural oral board exam @ Hurn in 1973, the first question Malcolm Lucas asked me was " why are we bothering to teach you procedural control when we're already going into a radar environment". Says I "so when the radar fails, we know what to do ". With a grin from all the board members , he said " but the engineers say that won't happen". I think I got several brownie points when I replied " that's what they thought at New York Centre until it dropped out last month!"
Funny how things havn't changed in 37 years isn't it ? :hmm: |
Brings back memories for me Eric....
Hope the EFPS thingy still works when the plug gets pulled.. Within days of one move I made into a new ops room the whole place died. That is, all except the bits of paper we had with funny scrawls on. Those and some standby R/T kept a lot of people alive that day. |
Malcolm Lucas 1973?
I was in the bar at the South Western one night in 1973 during my Area course; chatted to this pleasant bloke who looked like Alistair Sim the film actor. My b@stard cadet course mates never warned me who he really was!! |
I assume that the regulators will be asking for explanations and maybe calling for heads to roll. We'll see how serious they are about safety now.
On the beach |
Especially when it was known already that one mouse click could shut down every radar monitor in the ops room.:uhoh:
